UCI vs UCD vs UCSD for Engineering

I’ve been accepted to UCI and UC Davis for CSE, to UCSD for Electrical Engineering. I’m unsure where to commit. All will cost the same for me.
I’m primarily looking for postgrad opportunities, and, naturally, competitiveness in the job market.

Yes, yes, and yes.

So where do you want to be?

That’s the bigger question.

If you’re not from Orange County, you might find UCI campus lackluster on the weekends as it’s always been seen as a suitcase school.

Have you visited all three?

Choose where you’d be happiest.

Are you a transfer student?

Since those are different majors, which major do you actually want?

If you want CSE, CS, or CE, I would eliminate UCSD, because it is somewhere between difficult and impossible to switch from EE to CSE (see CSE department info), or to switch from EE to CE (see ECE department info).

UCSD seems to have also implemented an interesting major change policy - prioritizing low income and California residents in considering change of major. Haven’t seen a UC explicitly use these factors to allow change of major into CS majors.

Continuing students who apply to switch to a selective major must have completed the required screening courses for that major and be in good academic standing. They will then be considered for the major using a point system that awards one point each for having a 3.0 GPA or higher in the major screening courses; California residency; Pell Grant eligibility; and first-generation college status

If the OP fits the bill then UCSD may not be a bad option although I’m personally biased towards Davis.

Which major do you prefer?

If you think you may change to a different engineering major, look into how difficult it is to change major to the other engineering major at each school.

Yes.

I am a low income, first-gen California resident. I didn’t know about this, thank you for sharing this!

I’m unsure. I’ve always wanted to study CS, however, I’ve gained an interest for EE at my CC. I still want to work in IT in the future, which is the main concern for me regarding UCSD.

I would be cautious about UCSD’s new major change policy. As it’s brand new, I would worry that this policy might change by the time you would have finished the screening courses. Or, few or no spots might open up in the CSE / CE majors (they have been closed before).

If I were you, I would only enroll at UCSD if you think you could also be happy with the EE major. If you think EE sounds good too, it could be a fine choice, though!

I would also worry because OP is a transfer student. As such, they have a limited number of quarters to complete their major requirements and graduate.

Ok, I did not see that they are a transfer student. In that case I would advise that the OP choose a school where they were admitted to the major they prefer.
