UCLA '12 History Major AMA

So i’m completing my (possibly) last quarter at UCLA with a degree in history.
I was a transfer student so i do not know much about undergraduate experiences. But i honestly have to say that the two years i have spent at UCLA have been the best years of my life.
I will try to help to the best of my abilities new UCLA admits with general questions about life on campus, such as the classes, living in the dorms/living in the apartments, campus orgs, parties, majors, sports, extracurricular activities, etc.

If you guys have any questions, I’ll try to answer them.

What types of dorms have you lived in so far? And by chance, do you still have the bed and room’s dimension? You know, for early college shopping heh.

I’ve only lived in Rieber Terrace in a triple. I’d say its the biggest dorm compared to other halls. Rieber hall is pretty small and has no AC and personal bathrooms.

The room is about 15 feet by 8 feet. Not small enough to be cramped, but not big enough to have a lot of free space. I thought the size didn’t really pose a problem.

The beds are around 6 feet by 3 feet. Pretty much a normal twin size bed. Enough room to lay flat on the bed but not enough to move around and roll

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know which dorm is particularly close to the engineering department? I declared as a CS major. Also, is the dorm large enough to fit a full tower-sized desktop? I know most people opts for notebooks or laptops, but I just can’t help but feel ripped off whenever I look at their pricing.

And in your opinions, how are the food relatively compared to food you can get from nearby food chains/ restaurants?

All the dorms are on one side of the campus and you have to walk to the other side where the engineering department is. If your a fast walker you can get to it in around 15 minutes. i usually like to leave early and ill stroll to class in 25 minutes or so.

I had one friend who had a desktop on my floor. He was able to fit it perfectly fine. You can extend your desk out if you want. Most people have laptops so they can do something during class. Personally i would get a laptop if you have to choose one or the other just cus of its flexibility.

The food in westwood is alright. Personally to me, Berkeley food is much better. But the UCLA dorm food is far better than Berkeley dorm food

Hey fellow Bruin, and history major too! Well its nice to see someone from your same school better yet same major post on this forum. I was just wondering, I guess this seems kind of irrelevant to your post but…what are you planning on doing after I graduate? Yikes! Im graduating right now too, and have no idea on what I want to do post-graduation, besides the usual job hunting. If you dont mind can you give me a sense of some of your post graduation plans?

Welcome to unemployment, where you’ll join the other million-odd liberal arts majors in your exact position looking for jobs that don’t exist.

Not related to CC, but are you a redditor?
And also, what’s one thing on your UCLA bucket list that you are proud to have been able to cross off, and what’s one thing that still needs completion as the next few days tick away?

I didn’t think people would have still posted in this topic lol

I’m studying for my real estate exam right now and then I’ll be working with my family doing house renovations and selling properties. In a way, I’m lucky that i have family connections to have a job until I find out what i want to do.

I’m also looking into teaching SAT to high school kids through various parents that I know. I figure it’ll be a good job to have in the meanwhile and it’ll be pretty easy to convince them to hire me because i got a 800 in english and writing (though i did get a 600 in math)
I originally wanted to be a lawyer, but my brothers a lawyer and he told me that it’s not a glamorous job at all. He also told me that you have to have a good reason to become a lawyer, and tbh i still haven’t found that reason. Money certainly isn’t a good reason to be a lawyer.

I am a redditor, and one thing you should do is the undie run. Especially if you have a final on the thursday after

So what organizations were you involved with? What extracurriculars would you recommend?

Haha I figured since I have never seen anyone post AMAs on CC, that’s pretty awesome. Undie run is on my bucket list, have you gone tunneling before? Congrats on (hopefully) graduating by the way!!!

Hey I’m a history major that just graduated as well. This doesn’t really apply to freshmen or anything, but for those who just graduated or have graduated already some time ago, I encourage you to be persistent in your job search. Keep looking and apply to like at least 20 jobs a day. I started applying to jobs in winter quarter and finally had multiple job offers by the time I graduated.

For younger classmen, I strongly recommend you do internships. Internships are absolutely crucial to getting a job. And I’m not talking about working at some ASUCLA job. I’m talking about a real internship/job. Aim for the stars and don’t be afraid to apply. I know when you’re in school, you’re really busy, but honestly, instead of spending that 1 hour playing Diablo 3, use that time wisely to apply to a few jobs per day.

To give you history majors hope, I was offered a job at a huge entertainment company in Burbank (you figure out what it is) as an analyst. How did I get that job as a history major? Part of it was luck, but part of it was through my work experience, personality, and persistence. So don’t be discouraged. Apply everywhere, and pray/hope for the best.
