Hey, I don’t know if any current students and/or UCLA alumni go on this page, but I was curious what your stats were if you were selected by email to apply for the UCLA Alumni Scholarship way back when. Someone said that 60-80% of those who are asked get accepted but I don’t know how true that is. Thank you so much!
GPA - 4.5 (4.0 unweighted)
ACT - 34
SATii - Math 2 (800) Physics (750)
Captain of Track and XC, other ECs (Environmental Club, Boys State, etc)
Good essays
@ae5000 have you seen any trends with the invites and acceptances? I have a 29 ACT, 4.17 UC GPA, unique/good essays, good ECs, and applied as a Spanish major (I have a super strong passion for it and have lots of ECs relating to it. Plus it was the topic of one of my UC essays).
UC GPA - 4.25
SAT - 2160 (670 on math)
SAT II - Math 2 (790)
EC: Executive VP of ASB. Editor-in-Chief of yearbook. Founder of Ultimate Frisbee club.
Like @ae5000 I also attended Boy’s State (Portola 4 Lyfe)
Alright Essays
My daughter was invited this year and I called the Alumni Scholars Club a month or was it 3 weeks back to figure out what other scholarships she was eligible for since she is OOS and its pretty confusing for OOS students.
Anyways, I ended up speaking with a very nice lady. I did get the impression that the invitations are sent out very very selectively and she encouraged me to get my daughter (who has essay fatigue because she in the IB program besides having applied to a bunch of merit scholarships recently - all required essays) to apply because of the benefits of the scholars club.
From what I surmised from my conversation, UCLA admissions provides a list of kids to the ASC, their phone numbers and emails but does not share the actual UC applications so the ASC is kind of blind about you which is why you have to enter all your resume again. This list is provided to ASC a lot earlier than final decisions so kids who UCLA adcom might find attractive in 1st cut could drop off during the holistic review in the 2nd cut.
I see all you kids worried if there is something implied in being invited and I am not sure my post helps but i did have a direct conversation and this is what I recollect. So take it as a good sign but not a guarantee.
PS: My daughter’s stats : 3.94/4.43 Salutarian, IB Diploma candidate, 2230/33, Internship at a prestigious high profile research laboratory, a few good substantive ECs - not just a lot of minor things - decent essays but as a parent I thought she could have done better.
Did all of you who applied for the alumni scholarship get a confirmation email?
@sloppychair I got mine like two weeks. When did you apply?
Now that decisions are out, does anyone know if the scholarships will be announced soon? Or did I just not make it past the first round? haha
I think, now, it would be an excellent idea to compare the relationship between invite and acceptance
I’ll start: Invite, and admit.
SAT: 2020
SATII: Bio: 740; M2: 630
GPA: 4.3
President, lots of volunteer/community service, and dedicated to ECs
daughter was invited and admitted, no supplemental.
see my post above for her profile etc
Invited, didn’t apply (thought it was a generic marketing e-mail until I read otherwise).
I did get accepted to Astrophysics for the class of 2020.
GPA: 3.72 UW, 4.3 W (high course rigor)
SAT I: 2240 (780 CR, 770 M, 690 W)
Lots of astronomy, physics, and data-analysis related extracurriculars as well as a few more pedestrian ones. Solid essays.
When r we notified of acceptance?
Hello, this is a message from the UCLA Alumni Scholarships Program.
Candidates who submitted a complete application before the February 26 deadline, received the following email. If you have any questions, please email AlumniScholarships@support.ucla.edu
What’s next?
In late March, admission notifications will be sent from the UCLA Undergraduate Admission Office. If admitted, your application will be reviewed by Alumni Scholarships Volunteers, who are dedicated alumni and friends of the university across the nation. Between April 6-10, high scoring applicants will then be invited for an interview at one of our regional sites or via Skype. Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis. We will continue to notify recipients through August.
What determines the scholarship award amount?
After the interviews, we will make our first round of award offers for the scholarship base amount of $4,000 ($1,000 per year). Note: Additional grants are available to students who demonstrate financial need and have completed FAFSA/DREAM. You may receive up to $5,000 for your first year, in addition to your scholarship award, which is determined by the Alumni Scholarships Program and the Financial Aid Office.
What is the National Finals Competition?
In mid-April, the highest scoring scholarship applicants are invited to participate in a competition at UCLA to potentially increase their base scholarship award up to $20,000 ($5,000 per year). Students are brought to campus to meet current Alumni Scholars and UCLA Alumni for a weekend. This year, it will be held on April 23 & 24, with one day of welcoming events and another for the scholarship competition.
Wishing you the best of luck!
