UCLA Bio vs. USC Business Admin/Econ

I just got accepted into UCLA for bio (pre-med), but I’m having second thoughts about following through and such so I’ve been thinking of switching into business-economics. But I’ve learned that bus-econ at UCLA is impacted and therefore I cant switch into it so I’ve been considering USC business admin. I applied as a bio major there too, but I know switching majors there shouldn’t be a problem. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the best option would be for me? I’d really appreciate any advice!

its tough because pre-med and business are two very different things…a decision you probably have to make through experiencing the majors. both UCLA and USC are solid for both bio and business, making the choice difficult.

UCLA’s business econ is not impacted in the traditional sense…to switch in, you need a certain GPA in the lower division classes. (I think its 3.0-3.3? don’t quote me on it) not too bad if you work hard, and you’re going to need a nice GPA if you want to go to graduate/mba/get a nice job. switching majors is no problem between pre bus econ and biology at UCLA either, its very easy to do.

So the gist of what I’m saying is that UCLA and USC are very similar in their programs for biology and business (generally USC gets the nod in business, UCLA in biology). switching majors is easy. Therefore, my advice is base your decision on other important factors:
cost (USC = more expensive for in state), location (UCLA hands down), class size (USC), sports, and most importantly, the general feel of the school. Take time to visit both and see which you get a “feel for” better: you’re going spend the next 4+ years here, so you better enjoy the campus! No matter which one you choose, you can get the great “college experience” at both campuses. Good luck

So everyone in SoCal talks about the Trojan Network like its scripture- how much of an advantage can one really have by going to USC and becoming exposed to the alumni network over UCLA (like the ease of finding jobs granted you have a solid GPA, etc)?

H20Polo: Who knows? Personally I’ve found the recruiting at UCLA to be fantastic and doubt I’d be in any better a position had I went to USC.

I don’t think you’re in a bad position at either place.

About 1/4 of USC’s 4K+ grads take undergrad business-related degrees/year. I’m sure the alumni network would come into play for some, but it’d be impossible for all 1,000+ bus grads there.

Someone, maybe Dunn, had a stat on job placement of these ~ 1,000 and many, a lot, were looking for work many months after graduation.

it’s pretty easy to switch your major…just involves telling your counselor during orientation…but of course, as the previous person mentioned, you will have to maintiain a minimum gpa which shouldn’t be too bad

so I wouldn’t let the switching into majors thing affect your decision that significantly

just call ucla and speak to a counselor to make a final decision
