No marketing classes–the program here isn’t focused on business administration. There are plenty of management classes (that’s what the business side of biz-econ is) but a lot of that consists of accounting.

There’s one entrepreneurship class called Econ 106E, though it’s part of a group of classes (the 106’s) that is at the very end of the econ sequence. Most people don’t take these until their senior or junior year.

Business internship – that all depends on you.

Job – all depends on you as well. Lots of well-known companies recruit at UCLA, so there’s no lack of opportunities. But like anything, you’re going to have to make an effort.

internships and jobs are abundant, and there are many recruiters not just at recruiting fairs but they hold their own info sessions too. however, the best jobs (i.e. the ones with the top firms) are very competitive to get.

sign up for the “econ career net” email with the econ department. i get like maybe 2-3 emails a week from them about business internship or job opportunities. plus check out the career center and their online postings called “bruinview.”

so yeah there’s plenty of opportunities. but like brandnew2 said, you’ll have to make an effort to obtain an offer.

I am kind of a bizadmin type of guy but I want to go to ucla so bad so thats why im asking, but I bet the information you get from bizecon in ucla is very helpful and substantial too.

Exactly how competitive does it get for those high-end jobs/internships? I would love to be recruited straight out of a undergrad with a high paying job.

Yea, no doubt, you definitely learn substantial/useful information in biz-econ.

“I would love to be recruited straight out of a undergrad with a high paying job.”

-haha, wouldn’t everyone? Well for the real high-end jobs, you’ll have to take into account that you’re competing not only with the top UCLA students, but likely with top students from other schools (Ivies, etc) as well. So yes, those jobs are extremely competitive (as it is for everyone, everywhere), though I don’t have exact numbers.

What is considered a good GPA for bizecon students? I hear that 3.5 is considered pretty good.

For instance, in my high school i have a 3.9, 4.2 weighted but Im sure UCLA will be a great deal more difficult so is it possible to end with a much lower gpa than that in college?

Well, your high school GPA is about average for entering students at UCLA. I dunno, everyone’s different. There are people that had perfect grades in high school and end up not getting into biz-econ here, and vice versa. It’s really really hard to say because there are just so many different factors once you come here–how well you adjust to college , what classes you choose to take, everything.

But yea, on average, people in college have (sometimes much) lower GPA’s than in high school. I think (not sure) that the average undergrad GPA overall at UCLA is around a 3.2. Really, you should forget high school standards, they don’t mean anything here.

and also remember that a lot of top internship recruiters are looking for beyond the GPA. the GPA is really just a cutoff or qualifier. your interview(s), your work experience, leadership potential, etc. will be taken highly into consideration.
