I’m a prospective OOS economics transfer student and I’m wondering about how strictly UCLA scrutinizes the calculus sequence. At my university, I took Calculus I for Business/Economics (Honors), and Calculus II for Science/Engineering. Will they hold that against me?

It’s possible that your Calculus courses won’t transfer over as an entire series, in which case, you’ll probably have to repeat some Calculus at UCLA. I’m not sure if that eliminates you outright from contention (Calculus seems to be an important pre-req for econ), but its a possibility. If you are applying to Business Economics, your chances will definitely drop down to a near 0 number. For admission to UCLA, the order of importance goes something like:

Type of college applying from (CCC students automatically have more priority than everyone else)

Pre-requisite completion

GPA

Everything else.

An even bigger problem you face as an OOS student is that your courses might not transfer over at all, in which case you will probably not be considered (due to missing tons of pre-requisites or not having 60 semester units total). The best way to find out is to contact UCLA admissions although they may not nice enough to check equivalency for you (they have to ask faculty evaluators and go through all sorts of troubles). It’s worth a try.

UCLA has a 3.92 avg gpa transfer for Economics. They will reject anyone without all the pre-reqs. As an out-of-state applicant you have little / no choice. Having Calc for Business instead of engineering will probably be used as a reason to reject your application.
