I got a C this marking period in one of my classes…our end of marking period exam was really difficult and it was tough to get a good score.
I’m on the honor roll and I have a good GPA and I’m taking 4 AP exams this May, and I have tons of extracurriculars and community service hours…will that one C for the marking period ruin my chances of getting into UCLA?

Test scores and EC’s?
Getting one C is not great, but if your overall application is outstanding, then you have a chance. Remember UC essays are also important so work on those this summer. It would be helpful if you posted your stats…
Our parent portal doesn’t show us grades from the previous years so I just put in this year’s grades for S1 and it says 3.44…I’m sure it’s higher when I calculate it with last year’s and if I add up S1 of senior year (I’m a junior right now).
My first SAT was in the 2100s, but I’m slowly working to push it up to a 2300. Our school also doesn’t send out rankings because we’re a STEM school and our counselor considers it a bit discouraging if we were given class rank, since there’s only about 40 of us in the grade.
Extracurriculars:
Newspaper Club, Yearbook Club (editor next year), GirlUp Club (VP now, President next year), initiatives taken for HeforShe, Model UN, Debate Club/JSA, Director of Business for a student-run media company called Julia Darling Media Enterprises (also a staff writer for two sections of the magazine), DoSomething Club (based on the organization).
Volunteer work: 2015 Group Leader for Greenpeace; various volunteering opportunities from hospitals, a care center, ACS, and my old karate school (my volunteer work there is teaching the younger children); I also ran a jeans drive at our school as part of our DoSomething Club. I have about 200 hours total, and I’m planning on getting it to at least 250 by the end of the summer.
I also ice skate (it’s been a few years but I started again last year), but I’m not sure if I can include that because I’m probably not going to take lessons this summer. I still skate on my own and I’m teaching myself though.
What do the UC essays usually focus on? I heard that the apps this year open up in August.
Senior grades will not be included in the UC GPA. Average UC GPA for UCLA last year was 4.17 and average SAT was 2167. You are on target with your SAT, but you will need to be close to a 4.0 or higher with your GPA. EC’s are good.
The UC essay prompts should be the same as last year.
Prompt #1 (Freshman):
Describe the world you come from – for example, your family, community or school – and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.
Prompt #2 (All Applicants):
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
I’m trying to get it to near a 3.8 (weighted, because those are the GPAs our school sends out), but we’ve also heard that a B in our school is actually an A in a normal high school because our classes are based on college-style courses and our engineering classes are at the freshman level of college…does that affect anything? (I’m just curious, I’m not sure if the way the school runs is also considered when it comes to grades, because there’s only a couple of students who have GPAs at a 4.0)
