UCLA CLASS OF 2021 APPLICANT THREAD

Is there any way to find out if we’ve been accepted to the UCLA Honors Program?

Can we only apply to honors after we commit?

@tacimaci you have to apply for it. you can find it under “next steps” in your portal. it seems like they will send links for the online honors application soon.

Hi Kac123,
You’re in same situation as me. Anyway, I stayed at SLO for 1-week for their summer EPIC Engineering program. I didnt like the dorm (shower) and food needs improvement. It has a big gap compare to UCLA Sproul deluxe hall. The food and dorm at UCLA is superb. SLO is hands-on and UCLA tends to be more theory based. I tend to excel more on theory based but again high school doesn’t have much hands-on experiences. Let me know what you decide! I will be very curious to know. Thanks.

@10s4life How does the Tech Breadth work? For example, does a mechanical engineering major take one of the breadth areas that is not ME or do they take the one called Tech Breadth are in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering? I’m referring to this listing: http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/seasoasa/TBA.pdf

@youcee The tech breadth must be different than the major you are enrolled in. Tech breadth gives you knowledge in areas outside of your major.

@dennisy Haha you’ll be slumping it freshman year. Deluxe res halls were booked within 2 hours of housing opening up this year.

I got into UCSD for Molecular Biology and UCLA for Cell, Developmental, and Molecular Biology, and I’m planning on going to medical school. I love both schools but I’m unsure which would provide me with better research opportunities, which has the stronger Biology program, and which is more likely to get me into medical school. Also, which one is easier to get a high GPA?? Please let me know. Thank you

@10s4life Thanks for all of your guidance. We all benefit. I have another question. My daughter hasn’t made a decision yet on what school to attend, but is attending the Women in Engineering overnight and Engineering Day. If she decides that UCLA is a good fit for her, should she apply for housing that day? And how would you describe freshman housing? (She already has made a down payment for CP Pomona housing). Thank you.

@10s4life (or other similar person in the know) Which would you say is a better way to select a roommate (for ucla dorm, double or triple) : meeting other incoming freshman at Bruin Day (which might be kinda hectic, busy day, unrealistic though), or via that online UCLA profile thing (can’t find the page now, but saw it linked from housing app. page last night) ? Anything’s probably better than “going random” right?

@10s4life I was wondering if you could answer a question I had about AP tests… My highschool never really suggested that we take AP tests, so I have not take a single one. I am wondering if you think its worth it for me to study for a couple that way I can get out of some classes, or if I should just take the classes. I am currently listed as a Physics major, but there is a 50/50 chance that I decide to change it to something like economics or business. I am confident in my ability to do the work and get good results, but from what I have been reading, I worry that I might be entering at a disadvantage if I dont take the APs.

Another question I had was about my ability to take “random” classes at UCLA. While I will most likely major in Physics or Econ/Business, I still would like to be able to take art classes (photography, animation, film, etc), and literature classes. Is this a realistic possibility?

Thank you so much for answering all these questions!

Is there any word on when we should be expecting our acceptance packages in the mail?

@jewishmother I believe you have to SIR in order to submit a housing app. But there have been instances of doing so otherwise. There is no advantage to sending it in early. When you decide to commit is when I would send it in. It will save you $30. Its good she is attending discover engineering, it is a good event that swayed a lot of admits. Its not really “freshman” housing since everyone lives in a concentrated area called the hill. Most freshman will get classic res halls which have communal bathrooms, no ac, and are the most social. Its not a bad experience but not luxurious by any means.

I’m not sure why I chose Biology to be honest; I might as well have chosen undeclared!
do you think UCLA will offer opportunities to explore other majors and career paths?

@howToDecide2017 If you are trying to find a roommate that you do not know from your area/high school then the best way is either to find a roommate at Bruin Day, or through the class of 2021 Facebook page. That way you can message them and get to know them. The ucla random matching doesn’t work that great. But beware picking roommates has its risks. I picked both of mine and one of the them I have gotten really close with and ended up pledging the same fraternity and are rooming together next year. the other we do not get along with and have had numerous problems. But in general, picking is better.

@dminzi Besides AP Econ, calc, and english, the other ap tests do nothing for class skipping in most cases. GE’s cannot be skipped with AP tests. Since you are in L&S you should have space for random classes. Engineers do not have that luxury. The only ap tests that got me out of classes was AP Calc BC.

@ogaiollehto Should be this week. Be patient!

hi! I commented above, but I don’t think anyone saw it. I have a question regarding whether to choose UCLA or UCSD for pre-med/biology major so I made a discussions thread about it. If you would please help me and comment on it, that would be greatly appreciated. thank you! the link is below:
