UCLA CLASS OF 2021 APPLICANT THREAD

@helloucla844 Nice! That means you can be in 1 of three places. Delta terace, canyon point, and courtside. Delta terrace feels like hotel rooms. Canyon Point feels like apartments. While courtside feels like a retirement home. Very nice and new accommodations. Make sure to get to know you floor mates!

My D received her offer (De Neve Plaza, triple, private bathroom) but she also applied for the Gender Sexuality and Society LLC. She got a separate email asking some more questions about her preferences with regard to GSS. Does this mean that if she gets put in GSS, she might end up in a different building than her offer currently shows? I can’t tell whether she got assigned to De Neve based on the preferences she stated on the form and that if she gets into GSS she will have to switch, or whether she’s in De Neve because that’s where the GSS floor is.

@dustypig I am pretty sure that your daughter was placed into her preferred LLC because I know someone who wanted to change dorms but was unable to after UCLA Housing informed him that he was placed into his LLC and LLC students can not switch dorm rooms.

@10s4life Would you say that Hedrick is the “party dorm?” I’m somewhat worried because I got a triple classic there and I’m a generally introverted guy, so I’m afraid that I might not fit in. At the same time though I’m kind of excited because this will make it easier for me to meet new people.

@dustypig I’m not entirely familiar about the LLCs but I am pretty sure she is in it. One thing I am unsure about is if deneve has those types of communities. Typically they are in halls.

@Greninja Hedrick does have an on campus stereotype of being the party dorm because of the high concentration of freshman. There are quieter parts of Hedrick but compared to dykstra which is already somewhat rowdy Hedrick is much busier. It will be easy for you to meet people and if you are introverted this may help you out. I say go for it! You’re here at UCLA so make the most of it and go out of your comfort zone. You’re bound to find students on the floor you bond with. I’m pretty extroverted myself and found a perfect balance in a classic. Let me know if I can help in anyway. Welcome to UCLA!

any advices to register the classes for this Fall?

Just got off the waitlist yesterday. I’m OOS and was accepted into the college of letters and science.

@mochiko At freshman orientation your advicer will walk you through it. You only take 3 classes first quarter so it’s not too terribly difficult

Does anyone know what the financial obligations are if you rescind your offer after selecting your orientation date and making your housing commitment? I know you forfeit your SIR of $250, but not sure the rest. My D got offered a spot off the waitlist at another school, but we are trying to work out the details. Meanwhile she has to sign up for orientation today, and housing on Thursday.

I know orientation sessions signup are closing quickly now, after I sign up, if i need to cancel it, can i get my orientation money back?

Boulder > LA

@gratefulmama @mochiko Unfortunately the SIR, housing deposit, and orientation are non refundable. Orientation is billed in the fall as a part of your fall fees so if you do not attend ucla you will not get billed for it. The SIR is 90 if I recall. Not sure where 250 is coming from. My initial housing app fee was 30 and the housing deposit was over 400

@10s4life - Thank you! The SIR was $250 this year, so maybe it’s gone up, or if you are Regents, maybe it is less? Either way, I appreciate the info.

@liwen6 I also just got off the waitlist. Do you know when we get residence offers?

@gratefulmama I’m not regents. So maybe it did go up.

anyone know which sessions are still open for new student orientation?

@mochiko If you go on the portal you can see for yourself. That’s also where you register.

Hello I wanted to clear up some questions. We have to pay for a deposit for housing, is that later going to be reimbursed to us and is included in our financial aid if you received enough ? And also for the orientation costs, when do we actually pay those? Is that included in financial aid or is that all out of pocket?

@mario1999 Hope this helps. I don’t have direct experience with housing aid etc but this is how it works:

  1. The deposit is not a typical apartment/rental deposit. It’s actually the first “mini” payment for your housing contract. You do not get it back.
  1. If you get enough financial aid to cover housing or its more than tuition/fees this is what happens. So financial aid is distributed to cover/zero out any tuition and fees in the bruin bill. You'll see the bruin bill is seperate into housing and tuition categories. Housing is its own seperate entity so if your financial aid is more than tuition you'll get a refund. Basically UCLA will send you a check/ direct deposit if you set it up. You can then decide to use that however you want. Technically that money should go to housing but it's up to you.
  2. Orientation is 495 with 75 being added for early arrival. That is billed in your bruin bill in the fall as a part of tuition and fees. Everyone pays it. There is a small grant if your EFF is 0.
  3. If you get financial aid for housing pick the financial aid payment plan. This way you will pay les out of pocket because aid will be dispersed. If you are full pay I would reccomend the monthly. It's what my parents chose because they wouldn't be spending 14k at once for housing. Breaking it up into 2 summer payments and small monthly payments makes it much easier to manage. Quarterly and full only make sense if 1. You can afford a lump sum or you don't want to log in to pay monthly.

Note:College is expensive. But UCLA tends to be generous in financial aid to those that need it, sans OOS students. If you are full pay then you just pay all the fees listed. If you are offered work study or even if you aren’t there are plenty of opportunities to work and the wages are fair. Let me know if there is anything else you needed to know.
