UCLA Class of 2029 Official Thread

Hello potential Bruins!

It’s that time of year again as the UC application has now opened and submission starts October 1 through December 2 for this admissions cycle. I am @Gumbymom one of the two UC Forum Champions/Moderators. My Co-Forum Champion is @lkg4answers and we are knowledgeable on the increasingly complicated UC admissions process and hopefully we can help any prospective UC applicants with their questions.

UCLA like all the UC’s are test blind and will use 13 areas of criteria to review Freshman applicants. Each campus will weight the various areas of criteria differently so one size does not fit all. The UC application website has plenty of information that can help determine if UCLA is a good option when applying.

Undergraduate Admission

Freshman Applicants

UCLA considers all 3 UC GPA’s but the emphasis is on the Unweighted and Fully Weighted UC GPA’s.

2024 Freshman (First year) profile 25th-75th percentile: updated

Unweighted UC GPA: 3.95-4.00.
Median: 4.00

Capped weighted: 4.20-4.30

Weighted GPA: 4.42-4.76
Median: 4.60

Admit rates by College:
Letters and Sciences- 11%
Theater, Film and TV- 4%
Engineering- 5%
Arts and Architecture- 5%
Music- 20%
Nursing- 1%

For the College of Letters and Science, the applicant’s major is not considered during the review process.

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science admits students by declared major, with more emphasis on science and math programs.

The School of Nursing also places more emphasis on science and math programs and requires the submission of an additional supplemental application.

The School of the Arts and Architecture; Herb Alpert School of Music; and the School of Theater, Film and Television admit students by declared major (within the school), and put more emphasis on special talents through a review of portfolios and/or auditions, which are the most significant admission factors for these schools.

UCLA only guarantees review of an applicant’s first-choice major.
UCLA typically does not admit to the alternate major.

Selective majors include all majors in the Professional colleges along with the College of Engineering.

UCLA has a 4 year housing guarantee if the student meets the priority deadlines.

Thank you very much. I didn’t know the intended major of the applicant does not matter. And thanks for the links to the tours.

To clarify, Intended major is not a factor for admission only in the College of Letters and Sciences.

Hi everyone. Does anyone have a general idea of how long it takes to get a portal after applying? Thanks.

For your UCLA application status, there is a separate login to setup vs the student portal.

Here is the link that you set up separately: UCLA myApplication Status

applicants for fall 2025 will be able to check their status starting in mid-December

Thank you

UCLA’s portal is not like other schools. They just allow you to log on and see the status of your application.

I remember UCLA probably the most last one to send out the portal to applicant. There was not so much info in the portal, and S24 didn’t even bother to log in until March 15.

It didn’t have any portal astrology, compared with UCB.

UCLA does not send out portal information. They have a specific login for application status: UCLA myApplication Status

Yes, that’s all you can access in their portal after log in.

So glad to see UCB is finally behind UCLA. UCLA has consistent high academic standard unlike UCB… UCLA students balance between school and life well, 4 years of college doesn’t need to be stressful!

Go Bruins!

My S24 likes the school much and is enjoying his college lives with friends.

It is very fast paced, he just finished mid-term and preparing to register Winter quarter classes now.

DD24 chose Cal over UCLA since Cal actually has an undergrad business program whereas UCLA has “only” bizecon, and pre-bizecon at that. I would disagree to say that Cal’s programs are inconsistent or that there is no social life at Berkeley. I’ve been incredibly impressed with Cal’s week long orientation and how well Haas has treated the students with their retreat at Lake Tahoe. At GBO DD had a week long time of just meeting people making friends, visiting the city, going to an A’s game, singing karaoke, eating plenty of free food, playing different games and participating in fun activities. Even after GBO, she is enjoying her time up in the East Bay going trick or treating on Halloween, joining different clubs and organizations, and watching the football games. Now if they could only be consistent in their kicking game! I also find Berkeley much more lively than Westwood which has really seen its best times pass by. I would say the only things I think UCLA has over Cal is the food and dorms. Maybe weather, too. Cal food is not good and the housing is limited and not guaranteed beyond your freshman year. But who stays on campus after sophomore year anyway? I wouldn’t even say the Bruins sports teams are as good as before. But alas, I am conflicted since I grew up a UCLA fan since the late 70s and early 80s and wanted my DD to go to UCLA. Regardless, I believe she made the right choice.

Yes, let kids make their own decisions, good or bad, that’s their lives and experience. We, as parents, give them recommendations and supports.

About AP scores. My D25 have some 5s in her AP exams but she has also got one 3 in one of the AP exams. Should she not report that low score ? She is only applying to UCLA. Thanks.

UCLA use to have a comment on their Freshman selection page that AP scores were considered in the admission process but that statement is no longer there. That said, the general wisdom when reporting AP scores to competitive schools is report 4’s and 5’s even though UCLA gives credit for AP scores of 3 or higher.

There is no requirement to report any AP scores but recently some UC campuses have stated that they use AP scores to give context to the grades received in the AP classes.

All 5’s and one 3? I would not hesitate to submit the 3. A three is not a low score. It indicates you are qualified to receive college credit. Whether the UC gives you course credit is up to their policies. I have heard from many UC admissions counselors that information you submit can only help and not hurt your application. For reference my D24 submitted a range of 3 to 5. She is now a freshman at UCLA.
