INTERNATIONAL, GOT IN FROM THE WAITLIST!!!
Went to a California school for all 4 years. 4.55 UC, 4.32 W GPA, 3.86 UNW, Salutatorian of my HS, 10 AP Classes (two 4s and five 5’s, probably 4-5 on the rest of my exams) + Calc 2 and Calc 3 at community college. I have pretty solid extracurriculars too, but honestly nothing related to engineering. I come from a low income school which may have helped my decision. I’m especially shocked because I’m Asian and middle class (clearly I would have to cure cancer, right?) Still though, the tuition is a ridiculous pill to swallow. Its kinda saved by the fact that I’m doing Electrical engineering, but yeah I’m honestly still very hesitant because of it.
I live near UCLA but the commute is almost an hour from my house so I do plan on doming because if I’m spending 60k for tuition, might as well fork an extra 15kish for a dorm so I can get better connections, increase my club engagement, and save my mental health. But its a super difficult decision to make in a week. My alternative is SLO for 60k all inclusive, which I like the teaching style of more. All of my school councilors and teachers say SLO, but my parent’s are calling me an idiot for considering it. A big thing for me is international recognition which makes it a lot trickier; clearly, UCLA is more known internationally, which under this current administration, if I’m not able to work after college here (Under a TN visa cuz I’m Canadian) will benefit me in getting a job more in Canada if all hell fails.
Tricky decision, but I’m really happy I got in. I think a big reason why I got in is that the new administration is pushing more internationals away, and because UC’s rely on a certain proportion of the student populus to be international for subsidizing the tuition of in states, they are taking a bunch of out-of-states and internationals off the waitlist; a higher proportion than usual.

Congratulations!! If you are a low income International student, how will you pay? Parents taking out loans for you? Note your income status is not considered when reviewing your waitlist application.
Even with an EE degree, a huge amount of debt will effect your life for a long time post grad.
