UCLA Class of 2029 Waitlist and Appeals Discussion

UCLA Freshman decisions will be posting within the next few weeks so I have started the Waitlist/Appeal Discussion thread.

2024 Waitlist timeline: Thursday May 16 AM admits for OOS/International L&S. Friday May 17, In-state and some OOS Engineering. May 21, In-state L&S and Public Health majors, May 25 International, OOS and in-state admits. June 1 IS L&S admits, June 2 International CS/EE/ME, Public health. Few admits June 4 L&S. June 6 few admits. June 14, June 26, July 11 OOS, July 15 IS/International. Rejections on July 31.

Below is some previous years data and information regarding the Waitlist and Appeal process. The Waitlist admits will vary from year to year, so there is no way to gauge your chances of being admitted.

Last year, UCLA allowed the waitlisted students to submit a waitlist statement with new accomplishments and updated Senior grades.

AO’s say their selections are generally a continuation of the regular admission process, with consideration given to students’ original scores from application readers and whether their intended areas of study fill enrollment holes that year along with the waitlist essay and updated course/grades.

General Waitlist Information:

  1. UC Waitlists are not ranked and it is not first in, first admitted.
  2. There is no way to determine your chances from being admitted off the waitlist. It will be depend upon how many admitted students SIR and how many spots are open after the deadline.
  3. No specific timeline for waitlist admits. If space opens up before the SIR deadline of May 1, then students can be pulled from the waitlist.
  4. Residency type and major are not broken out for the UC waitlist statistics.
  5. The number of waitlisted students that actually enroll is not listed.
  6. No LOCI’s since UC’s do not consider demonstrated interest. Opting into the waitlist shows your interest in attending.
  7. Opting into the waitlist is by invitation only.
  8. You cannot appeal your decision while on the waitlist.
  9. UCLA did accept waitlist statements and Senior grade updates

Did UCLA post how many students were offered waitlist last night?

Should be something similar to the numbers below:

2024 Numbers: 2024 CDS data

Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list: 15023
Number accepting a place on the waitlist 9198
Number of waitlisted students admitted 1211

For the written wait-list statement, is this basically a LOCI/why UCLA letter?

Yes along highlighting any new achievements.

Adding the waitlist form and instructions. Some observations: 1. 7000 characters seems a lot, maybe helpful to be conscise. 2. spring schedule seems repeated information, maybe highlight any changes or higher rigor if different. 3. There is also an example for course listings ( in the blue link)

hello everyone!! i was just waitlisted from UCLA as a hopeful bio major, and i have already written up my LOCI. do you think its smart to also include my senior year grades? they are as listed below:

AP Chemistry: B
IB Global Politics HL: A
IB Spanish SL: B
IB Biology HL: A
IB Literature HL: A

i wasn’t sure if the B’s would hurt me. let me know when you get the chance. thank you!!

Yes, include your Senior grades. A couple of B’s is fine.

hi again! is it realistic/possible for someone to be accepted from the wait-list before the SIR date of May 1? I imagine that they wouldn’t start reviewing wait-list LOCIs until after May 1, but lmk!!

Yes, it is possible to be admitted off the waitlist list before May 1 if UCLA sees that their enrollment targets are not being met prior to the SIR date. In 2022, there were a few waitlist admits on April 30th but for the 2024, UCLA did not admit until after the SIR deadline.

UCLA has one of the highest yield rates (enrollment rate) for all the UC’s with an overall 50% and 60% for in-state applicants. Many admitted students need to decline their acceptance before they start pulling from the waitlist.

My son was admitted off of the waitlist on 4/28/2023. It is possible.

Hi sorry so I’m a bit confused here. Can we include a narrative text here about the continued interest or is it just as a space for updated transcript and schedule? Thank you.

When responding to the waitlist question can we include a narrative text here similar to LOCI or is it just as the space for updated transcript and schedule? Thank you.

I thought ucla didn’t allow LOCI?

you can do both. include a pargraph or two about updates since applying and add/update course schedule and grades
