UCLA cross country recruiting

UCLA is my dream school and I would love to run crosss country for them when I graduate highschool. I’m a sophomore with a 5k time of 15:44. I had some personal problems at the time which affected my time as I could have done better. My schools cross country team is the best in our leauge and we have been undefeated for 2 years so far at the varsity level. We have gone to CIF prelims and finals, this year and last and I have raced both times. I am also All-leauge 1 year. Not sure of track times but I shall see later on this season.

I am an URM, have a few SIGNIFICANT cross country awards/achievements and my grandfather was an alumni of UCLA and has donated in the past. I know various other people who have graduated from UCLA.

I am taking AP classes and plan on taking the SAT/SAT II/ACT my junior and senior year. My GPA is a bit on the low side rounding off to about a 3.5 weighted. I plan on getting my grades up to hopefully 4.0+

So I have two questions…

 1. Do you think I have a chance being recruited by UCLA? (I don’t care if it’s scholarship or walk-on as I just want to attend the school! Also, keep in mind I have 2 years left, and our team gets faster every year.)

 2. Do I fill out the UCLA recruit form now? I heard the sooner the better, but as the form asks for SAT/ACT scores which i do not have atm, I am unsure…If I do fill it out then that’s it? Or do they contact me or what? I am pretty confused about recruiting up to this point and would like some clarification.

Thanks =] Umm maybe that was like 6 questions lol

Bump~~~~~~~~`

Any UCLA cross country athletes out there? Or any Division I school for that matter…

It is early to fill out the recruiting forms. It seems as if junior year would make more sense, when your times are faster, and UCLA is beginning to think about your class, and what their recruitment needs are. Regarding not having test scores yet, you can always add those later - by that, I mean if you fill out recruiting forms in early junior year and don’t have those scores yet, you can pass those by on the form. If you attract their interest, the coaches will ask you for all that information once they start e-mailing you and putting together a list of potential recruits. Good luck!!

All I know is that 15:44 is fast for a HS sophomore! Keep up the good work.

I don’t know about XC recruiting times at UCLA, but if you were being recruited I’d think that you’d get into UCLA so long as you meet the NCAA requirements (they may be slightly higher, but it sounds like you’ll be fine; just keep up the school work). The standards really aren’t high for the athletes at most D1 powerhouse schools.

Actually, even if they really want you, I think you still need to meet the minimum standards for admission into the UC system. A CAL coach told my son they had never not gotten an athlete they wanted who met the minimum standards. Not sure if the CA standards are higher or lower than NCAA standards…
