Ucla dma 2020

hi guys! i also applied to DMA from my CCC this year, the wait is killing me. I submitted a few graphic design pieces, along with some more fine arts pieces, but i’m seriously so nervous, and have no idea what to expect…
good luck 2 u all

Does anyone know when we should get an invite for the DMA open house event? Are they even going to send them out this year due to covid-19?

I’m wondering about that too! I think they are supposed to come a little later this month, but with everything going around, who knows if they’re actually gonna do it

Hey guys! Unfortunately, (or fortunately depending on how you see it) I heard that getting into DMA is basically all based on the portfolio and maybe your essays. Once the art department wants to admit you to their program, they relay this message to the general admissions office, make sure you meet the threshold minimum requirements (I believe 1200 sat) and then that’s it

I applied to DMA this year as a transfer student. My portfolio is pretty much just 2D art with the exception of a movie poster and mobile web design for clothing that I designed. From what I read, creativity is the part they stress the most, so I don’t think submitting just ‘traditional’ work would count you out. A lot of the DMA students that I follow mostly post graphic design work so I’m assuming that’s what they may have also sent in for their portfolios.

Also, I’m wondering what people did for their solidarity projects or if anyone wants to share their portfolios?

This is an example of a portfolio that was accepted last year if anyone is interested. She mostly submitted colored pencil drawings but my guess is that they were really intrigued by her color project.

Here’s the accepted Portfolio (not mine):

I want to share my portfolio but it seems like the site won’t let me post links

@supernovab1tch I see what you mean, it won’t let me post a link to a Google drive folder. If it’s cool with you, I’d be down to exchange portfolios through Instagram or whatever works for you.

@NationE Sure I’d be down for that! Dm me at @/portfoliothrowaway

If anyone wants to exchange portfolios over Instagram, just DM

Just want to get an idea of what people submitted

@10s4life That is not my understanding of how School of Art and Architecture works. From the tour that we went on (the School of Art and Architecture tour, not general admissions), we were told that the faculty at SAA review the portfolios, give their list of preferred candidates that they want to admit to general admissions, then verify with general admissions that students have the minimum GPA of 3.0 and that they took the SAT or ACT. They don’t even care about your scores, as in no cut-off for scores. They just want to make sure you took the tests. It is entirely based on the portfolio provided you have a 3.0 and took the stupid SAT and ACT tests (sorry I am extremely anti-standardized tests…). If they want you, and you have the 3.0 and took the SAT/ACT, then you are probably good to go. It would make little sense for general admissions to provide list of DMA students to Alumni Scholarship based on GPA and SAT if those things matter zilch to get into the program, but then again, so many things don’t make sense anymore so who knows…

@WhimsicalSquid, same here with my son. There is no way he’d get the Alumni Scholarship invite based on his stats. He has a UW 3.69 and only a 1300 SAT, but he is a pretty talented artist and has had some very interesting EC. Of course, the Alumni invite could be a complete fluke and random people were chosen, but that just feels inefficient and unproductive. Again, given how everything operates in this world right now, that might very well be the case. He did get into UCD and a bunch of other schools, but DMA is what he is ultimately waiting for, but if it doesn’t happen, life goes on (at least we hope it does). Stay healthy and sane everyone!

@scubaboulder Yes, it’s so confusing with DMA! I see three main possibilities: 1. Alumni invite is mostly based on the leadership/EC aspects of the app (there are three of us on this thread saying our kids had average stats but strong EC’s); 2. The “greater number” of kids sent the invite this year was really a huge number, making it much less significant of an indicator than previous years; 3. Arts and Architecture actually DOES submit to Alumni after portfolio review, as you and I both pointed out that it makes little sense to give them a list of kids who have an astronomical chance of getting in (plus 10s4life said it gets sent to them after general admissions, and I struggle to understand why else that would be). Of course it could be just about anything else too! Personally, right now getting in just feels very unlikely over here, and I’m looking forward to the wait being over. But congrats on Davis and good luck tomorrow!

“it makes little sense to give them a list of kids who have an astronomical chance of getting in”

*miniscule, not astronomical! Sorry, that would’ve driven me crazy.

I feel like I’m going to cry now. I never took the SAT/ACT.

@supernovabitch I don’t think you have to worry if you’re a transfer student. SAT/ACT for incoming freshmen is required, but not transfer students. Good luck tomorrow

@biogsktene Thank you so much for clarifying!! I was about to get super worried! Good luck to all the freshman tomorrow!

anyone wanna put they instas for portfolio ?

@anonymous5583 yeah, I posted my Instagram username earlier but here it is again: nation.32
Just DM me and I’ll send you the link to the Google drive folder.
Also, I’m pretty sure that pretty much everyone gets the Alumni scholarship invite. I got one and it said that receiving the email is in no way a sign that you are more or less likely to get in. Good luck to all freshman apps! Transfers still have to wait another month for decisions.

Does anyone know about the open house invitation and when or if we are going to get them?
