UCLA Engineering Q&A

the cs 32 final was basically like the midterm except that the bigoh notation on complexity is on it. STUDY IT! I got absolutely dominated by the BigOh notation. You have to know what the best structures to use in certain situations were and on top of that the general complexity of those structures you make up. The types of structures on mine were like hash tables of binary trees, stuff like a combination of different structures.

As for Smallberg teaching cs33, i’m not sure if SSfren mixed him up with Rohr, but Rohr is the only person teaching CS 33 this spring and i’m pretty sure that rohr was the only person teaching cs 33 in the spring quarter as well. I haven’t heard of smallberg teaching cs 33 at all since hes already teaching both 31 and 32 almost each quarter of the year.

And yes I had time to study, I just studied for it the night before after I had turned in the projects lol. I felt like CS was like math in that you should already know most of the topics since you did the homework/projects and have used them all pretty thoroughly, it was just the small little details that had to be studied and the non-coding parts.

Yes.

Rohr was the only one teaching CS 33 fall quarter this school year so take that as you will. I heard from a friend that Smallberg taught CS 33 spring quarter last year so it does happen.

The only confusing part for the last CS32 final was choosing which combination of data structures to use as previously mentioned.

VERY true. i did the worse on this section. best of luck!

That rumor is true.

If you are planning to take CS 33 my advice is to not take it with Rohr. Seriously, don’t take Rohr. MIPS itself is a boring language, and coupled with a boring and incompetent professor like Rohr, enduring that class is probably worse than enduring Hell. My roommate is in his class right now and not a day goes by without him hurling expletives at Rohr randomly during any given day.

P.S. I was in his class, but I had the good sense to dropout halfway through.

does LA have a good bioengineering program?

and how much free time should i have every day or does it depend heavily on what type of engineering?

thanks

CS33 with Rohr REALLY isn’t that bad. if you’re a good programmer (meaning an A in the class), it really doesn’t matter if you have rohr or not.

however, if you have the choice between rohr or smallberg, obviously take smallberg.

Didn’t know you could go back into the registrar archives like that. Thanks for sharing that fun little tidbit.

Slim to none, Rohr has been the only professor for CS 33 fall quarter for the past 10 years.

MadeInChina is probably an exception in thinking that Rohr isn’t that bad, but hey, don’t take my word for it: Ask other students who have taken his class and the majority will agree with me, or look in BruinWalk and there as well you will find a majority who share my opinion. And even then if you are not convinced about Rohr’s incompetence in an area called TEACHING, take his class and you will experience firsthand what I am talking about.

Taking Rohr’s class basically convinced me of doing one thing (and he has done this to others as well): Getting the hell away from the CS pathway! Goof f’ing riddance. Do I sound bitter? Probably, but the CS department really needs to do something about this monstrosity, or more and more CS student will drop out of the program. To quote a review from Bruinwalk:

Ditto

Hey guys, I’ll most likely be attending UCLA’s engineering program this fall and had a question.

Any of you know if I need to know some programming beforehand? I’m willing to learn some languages over the summer if that’ll give be a headstart. :)

Thanks!

baeksulgi: Yes, you do. Revise your C++ and write lots of programs.

Here’s the CS 31 website, try writing some of the programs over summer. Good luck.

Flopsy:

What’ll be the fate of the ‘Ask Flopsy’ forum after you graduate?

Thank you so much for your replies!! Your tips on CS32 final are really helpful. Data structures and time complexity are precisely what I’ve been studying this weekend, just to get STARTED on project 4. I can’t believe how hard it is to get started on project 4! I sure hope it goes smoothly and gets done on time after such a painstaking starting process.

Yeah. I thought it was unlikely to find Smallberg teaching CS 33 next fall. T_T so sad. Citan, your posts were so funny to read, cuz I had Rohr for CS 31 last quarter, so I know what you’re talking about. I really can’t imagine taking a class as difficult as cs 33 with Rohr either. but I guess I must face it. But, I also agree with MadeInChina that taking a class with Rohr is not THAT bad. I feel that having Rohr for teacher gave me a stronger self-discipline as a CS student. He pretty much forces you to read the textbook before class, cuz otherwise you will have absolutely no idea what’s going on in lecture.

btw I’m currently an EE(straight option) major. i had no experience with CS before coming to UCLA and am now considering a CS pathway cuz I liked CS 30 series so far. Thanks again and good luck on your finals!

This thread will be fair game for any UCLA engineering students to govern.

From my rotting body, flowers shall grow and I am in them and that is eternity.

Where will you be working next year, flopsy?

does UCLA have a good bioengineering program?

^ it’s only a few years old…so it might be good, but it’s still not very recognized.

I’ll be at a start-up game company in Sherman Oaks, working as a game programmer.

" As for Smallberg teaching cs33, i’m not sure if SSfren mixed him up with Rohr, but Rohr is the only person teaching CS 33 this spring and i’m pretty sure that rohr was the only person teaching cs 33 in the spring quarter as well."

He definitely taught it last spring…I was in his class all year from CS 31 to CS 33, so I thought that’s how it worked.
