quick question about classes for fall 08

my upcoming schedule is going to look like this:

physics 4bl
math 33b
ee1
cs 35L

I think thats only like 12-13 units total, but it seems like a beast. The engineering curriculum suggests taking a GE along with this but it seems like that would be too much. Should I stick with those 4 classes or should I add a GE on top of it? Or would that be pretty hard to accomplish?

it depends on how much you think you can handle since only you know your own capabilities.

i had a pretty similar schedule but with eem16 as well. that quarter was probably my most overwhelming one so far but it was because i pledged that quarter.

in terms of difficulty/time (IMO):
-4bl: takes up the most time. but can be significantly reduced…
-math33b: pretty easy and the curve was extremely high…
-ee1: hardest out of the 4.
-cs35L: the first four weeks were the hardest. it gets a lot easier afterward. but you might see yourself putting in a lot more time in the beginning of the quarter.

So you’re recommending that I should take CS 31 in the Winter/Spring than in the Fall? But that means I have to take it with Rohr for Winter.

Sorry if this is out of place, but I was wondering if someone could chance me for UCLA engineering…

take it in the spring with smallberg. you’re definitely guaranteed a higher grade in the spring than in the fall.

I would but that means I would have to wait until the following winter quarter to take CS 32. I don’t plan on being around that long. Besides, Prof. Eddie Kohler will be teaching CS 31 in Spring '09.

I have to make a decision: Smallberg in the fall vs. Rohr in the spring? :(

Hey, I’ll probably take Math 31A in the fall and I don’t want to go on in a ‘mental vacation’ so I want to get ahead during this summer. I was thinking on purchasing the textbook for the course, is it really the “Single Variable Calculus” by Rogawski textbook?

Another thing, I’ll also be taking CS31 in the fall, so I also want to get ahead since I’ll be competing with a bunch of experienced computer science ppl, which textbook do you guys use for C++?

PS: I already checked the registrar’s schedule website and the name of the textbooks are still not available.

I believe they switched to Big C++ with Smallberg this quarter, although Absolute C++ should do the trick as well.

hamburgler2:

UCLA: Match (Engineering)

Don’t bother. Enjoy your summer. We’re more adaptable than we give ourselves credit for.

Flopsy, did you see the beach balls during commencement? Heh, I was the one who smuggled them in. My friend and I were trying to blow them up in secret so the ushers wouldn’t take it away.

Now question is, who will continue the legacy? Will it be chemicals who do this next year?

TB54

Yeah, I saw the beach balls, at least until they got confiscated… My non-alcoholic celebratory refreshments also got confiscated at the door. Oh well, at least the paper airplanes weren’t taken away.

I never thought I’d quote a Bush-ism, but it will be a “coalition of the willing” that continues the legacy.

LOL at our HS graudation there were only 2 beach balls this year --_–

I was sitting behind the guy doing the paper airplanes. He sure does have the arm strength, but its gotta be all in the wrist.

wow, i never realized the beach ball thing happened at colleges, too… i thought it was just our high school (along with inflatable sharks, and once a naked blow-up doll, as well as bouncy balls).

hey flopsy,

for the four classes i mentioned earlier,

ee1
cs 35L
physics 4bl
math 33b

I can sign up for three of these with my first pass,

Am I right in thinking that I should probably sign up for the two labs 35L and 4BL and then EE1? That would be a total of 8 units leaving 33b to signup. Since the labs are 2 units each and the others are 4 units each, I can signup for any combo of three classes with my first pass. Are those three the best choice in your opinion?

^

you’re exactly right.

hey guys, I need some help planning my schedule for fall quarter.

I screwed myself over big time this quarter and want to avoid doing it again. I took Math 33A, EE1, EEM16, and Physics 4AL (my first lab class), and ended up with a C+ in math and a B in M16… ugggh. The C+ was my fault while M16 was just plain hard.

I was expecting it to be an easy quarter since I only had 14 units… but it ended up being worse than winter quarter when I took 18 units. The lab and M16 combined took up a ridiculous amount of time… the labs got easier after the first couple but M16 HW and studying got more and more ridiculous.

How should I go about planning my next quarter. Here is the pool of courses to pick from:

CS32, EE2, EE3, EE10, EE101, Math 33B, and Physics 4BL

I’m thinking of taking:

What do you guys think? Is that too crazy?

Hey electrifice, I also got a C+ in 33A and felt so stupid after receiving my grade for that class. Don’t let that phase you though, I’m sure you’ll do better in your upcoming quarters.

As for your current proposed schedule, it seems pretty fair:
EE3 only requires attendance (from what I’ve heard)
Math33B is one of the easiest in the math series (or my professor was really lenient)
EE2 may be conceptually hard, but it isn’t that hard to understand given you study it outside of class
And I don’t know anything about EE101.

Given your situation, I feel like this schedule would be a good chance for you to recuperate and raise your GPA.

Oh and btw, CS32 isn’t offered in the fall.
