Take a couple of classes and you’ll begin to understand why.

UCLA has one nuclear engineering class that I know of (MAE 135). There isn’t even a nuclear program at the graduate level (Abdou is the closest to work under).

So if you’re interested in nuclear, go somewhere else, like Poly (though not the top program).

I think colleges like Georgia Tech, UIUC, and Ann Harbor are highly underrated by people in the West Coast (particularly people who only consider HYPS, UCs, and hardly anything else).

UCLA wasn’t ranked in industrial/manufacturing but you still listed it.

I know UCLA doesn’t have a nuclear engineering program

i’d say about 80% of people from east + central USA would choose ann arbor over UCLA for engineering any day

edit: to further boelter’s statement that

^^ After reading so many “not so good things” about UCLA’s engineering, I kind of regret choosing UCLA over UIUC for Computer Science Engineering… -_-… not that I didn’t know how top UIUC is for Comp. Eng. but still…
As an international student, I was looking more at the whole environment/city opportunities as well as the name recognition since I’m gonna be in the US only for college and people in my country imagine LA as a “wonderland” kind of thing.

Good for you, but some people don’t. Some hiring managers and nuclear managers don’t even know.

So … why UCLA Made in China? Aren’t you from the East coast?

hi there, im an incoming engineering transfer student to UCLA. i am registered for 3 classes for the fall quarter(12 units). Unfortunately, due to a personal matter, i need to cut down to 2 classes(8 units). only for the fall quarter. i know this means a part-time student status. What are the steps to follow in order to request this? do i have to schedule an appointment with the office of student affairs? will my tuition fee be halved?

I chose UCLA over Michigan.

Yes, you have to go to the HSSEAS Office of Academic and Student Affairs and fill out a petition form to drop down to <12 units. However, you have to have a unique and compelling reason why you can’t simply “hack out” 12 units with a GE as your third course – my former roommate was denied 8 units even though he was working a part-time internship.

Ranking:
For chemical/civil, the reason why we aren’t ranked so high is because the program is relatively new compared to the other UCs Generally, the longer the program has been ABET accredited, the more its fame, budget, professors tend to be. (As to whether an ABET-accredited versus non ABET-accredited program degree is the same debate, that can be another discussion)

For < 12 units:
I seriously wonder what some of the counselors are paid for. Some of them are good, some of them are bad, so bad in fact that their job is literally taking their frustration on the student.

Involve your petition with a financial situation, graduation term and anything that is literally involved and thought-out. I had to file an appeal and another petition after being denied a petition (this really was unnecessary), not only did it take so long to get the appeal cleared, they wasted my time and effort and actually lost my first petition).

Im an UCLA EE and I think the program is quite good…

LOL that was random…

Citan, how easy was it for you to get a summer internship?

being in California is probably more advantageous, even if the CS program is not as highly-regarded, simply because Silicon Valley is just a couple hundred miles north.

i chose ucla CSE over CMU CS and UIUC CS for many reasons, but the most simple one being: i wanted the best college experience.

i wanted a good balance between academics, sports, social life, night life, networking, weather, jobs. and i figured the best school for me would be ucla. academic “rankings” don’t matter if you go to a school that doesn’t fit you.

plus i don’t think it matters much anyway. if i went to uiuc or cmu or michigan…i would have probably landed the same internships and be where i am right now all the same.

aren’t you from cali, flopsy? if not, congrats for being one of the 20%

How is Civil Engineering courses? Will it be difficult and time consuming? I’m planning on working while taking full-time classes at UCLA.

Hey guys, I’m looking for some pointers on getting a summer internship in EE at the end of sophomore year?
Does anyone know how many UCLA EE students that apply for internships actually end up getting one?

Hey I’m starting my 2nd year as an EE (CE option), and after taking CS 31/32/33, I am going to be taking CS 35L in the fall.

I heard that the class is kinda hard for people who have no experience with linux… is this true? is there anything i can do for the next 2-3 weeks before school starts to get a head start?

just a lil worried… want to do well… i also feel like i’ve forgotten a lot from my first year ><… all that C++… lol…

Thanks =]
