UCLA Engineering Q&A

To get exposure to Linux, I suggest installing and using it… most distros are free and easy to install. You might be better off trying to use a less “user-friendly” distro to get your feet wet. A few years ago that used to be Slackware… not so sure about right now, but a little google search should turn up something. The point is to get to use the command line as much as possible to configure/use your system.

None of my EE colleagues ever got an internship as a sophomore; I doubt it’s possible unless you have serious connections or have junior standing and a high GPA.

I recommend you familiarize yourself with the material from the previous offering of the class.

[UCLA Computer Science 35L, Spring 2008](http://www.cs.ucla.edu/classes/spring08/cs35L/)

i was nervous about cs35l too since i had no linux exposure.

i read some tutorials online during the first week of class (because the first lab was beyond confusing for me). it helped slightly to read tutorials on regular expressions.

how long does it take for each lab to finish in 4bl? 4al took like a day…gay.

4bl labs definitely took me longer

my 4al labs were around 5 pages and my 4bl were around 10-12.

3-5 hours.

ahahha you better work quick in BL, some people would just skip parts of the lab.

yes. do it!!

hello to engineering students in ucla

i have a question regarding double majoring…i am planning on transferring to ucla as a business economics major; i would like to declare a double major in civil engineering after i am in…i was wondering what the process is in doing so…difficulty in doing this. what do admission people look at when u r trying to double major (or possibly change)…especially in my case

be very thorough with the responses/processes

thanks to all

I think you are asking how long it takes to finish the lab report for 4BL. Expect double the amount spent on a 4AL report. 4AL took around 5-6 hours, 4BL can take up to 8-12 hours (including data entry, plot creation, analysis, research).

In what flopsy was referring to, performing the 4BL lab will take on average a little more than 3 hours. I hear recently that TAs are being more lenient and skipping many of the experiements in the manual, so you might be able to get out in 3 hours (completing the steps, data procurement).

ccforumaq:

You will take around 6 years to get the degrees.

really…why so long? what if i completely switch to civil engineering, and do a minor in econ…plus, BoelterHall or anyone else who can answer, what’s the process in switching to civil engineering and the difficulty in doing so…who do i have to face, and do they let u do the switch as long as you finish the prereqs, right?

please feel free to make responses/answers long and thorough!!!

i just got my com sci 31 textbook and read the first chapter, and it’s completely going over my head. i have no previous programming experience, and my professor is Rohr, who is supposed to be completely useless. i know that i probably should have learned some CS over the summer, but its kind of too late for that now.

any tips that would help me not fail?

practice.

practice the exercises in the textbook to give you some hands-on practice. reading the syntax and the code may give you a headache so install the software and test some code yourself

Hi all, I’m a Junior transfer student majoring in Chemical Engineering. I have some questions which I’m very confused about.

URSA says that Chem Engr 101A and 109 are are closed for this fall. I’ve been constantly checking it for vacant spot for the past month but no luck. By missing the 101 series, does that mean that my graduation will be delayed?

Is it advisable to “skip” the requisite and take it in a later quarter so I will have an opportunity to graduate on time?

What are Technical Breadth Course actually? (I’ve seen the HSSEAS website but their description doesn’t really help me)

What does it mean by “Chemical Engineering Electives”?

TIA for your answers…

Except for the midterm, which you have to take in your own lecture section, all assignments and the final are the same for all CS 31 sections, so you can attend any lecture.

That admission reveals work habits that, unless changed, may well lead to failure in the class.

Don’t let any fear about not knowing what you’re doing keep you from following the most important rule for success in the class: Start early on the projects. Even if you write only a little code that solves a tiny part of the problem to begin with, there’s a psychological benefit to having gotten past the phase of staring at a blank screen/sheet of paper. Everything you do from that point on is adding another little capability to what you’ve already written, and making sure that works before proceeding.

My friend who’s a computer science major at Iowa State says for most of his math classes, he uses mathematica and maple to do the assignments. At what point will I need to use those at UCLA?

never used mathematica and maple

but i have used matlab for cs/ee courses. and pspice for ee courses.

but i’m unsure if some classes use maple or not…

Does anyone know how hard it is to get some research experience? Also, how do you apply for research… just by asking professors?
I have genuine interest in research and don’t just want to do it for building a resume or anything like that.
