UCLA Engineering Q&A

Anyone signing up for CS 111 next quarter…there’s a new prof called Nahapetian…usually it’s Eggert…
anyone know anything about her?

And, I’m thinking of doing CS 151B along with CS 111…Is that okay workload?
any tips abt CS 111 would help…

sounds like we have similar schedules…i’ll be seeing you in class (cs111/csm151b) lol. professor nahapetian is now known for being the “good looking CS professor” and there’s no way she can be harder than eggert.

and since reinman is teaching csm151b, looks like it’s going to be a good class :]

and actually, it’s usually not eggert for cs111 in winter quarter…it’s supposed to be kohler. but he’s not teaching this year :/

what other classes are you taking?

Oh wow, today Smallberg said that CS32 is extremely time consuming and he recommended that we sign up for an extra class, like a GE or something at least to have a back up in terms of credits because if we find CS32 too hard/time consuming, we might have to drop a course but would still fulfill the minimum units.
Anyone that took CS32 can testify that?

MAE 101 should be easy, but MAE 105A is a tossup. Both are a bunch of bookwork.

so right now there are 6/45 spots taken for CS 161, which seems like an absurdly low amount of people in this class

my next quarter is looking like its going to be:

ee1
GE
cs 161

anyone know if this is a decent schedule? its basically the only crap that will fit, since CS 101 isnt offered, stats 110a doesnt fit, physics 4bl is full, cs m152a (the lab, might not be the right name) is full, and i’m not sure if i want to take cs 131. anyone taken 161 with dyer before? or know how difficult it is with only have cs 31/32/33/35L experience?

and also, has anyone taken cs 180?

or can anyone suggest any cs class for me to take (i’ve already got cs 31/32/33/35L/m51a)

Also, for classes with enrollment restrictions for JUNIOR/SENIOR, does that mean that sophomore standing people definitely cant sign up for it? i’m 2 units from junior standing, which is really lame, and the only possible cs classes I can take have this restriction. Or does it just mean we have to wait until second pass to sign up

I’m taking a Design & Media arts class for sci & tech.

I think I’m going to stick to 3 classes cause people keep telling me how CS 111 is hell…

I was originally going to take CS 131 because I thought Millstein would be teaching…but it’s Eggert again…

anyway, what classes r u taking?

Prof. Smallberg gives that speech every quarter, and yes it is true…

Since CS 32 is required, you might as well get it over with…prepare yourself for a hard class. It’s twice as hard as CS 31…
if u start all projects in advance (this is VERY important), they’re all doable…

but, yeah…sometimes people are overwhelmed by the class…and if it’s too much for u, u might need a backup class

Yes, this is all true. CS 32 is twice as time-consuming as CS 31, and instead of 7 projects and 2 homeworks you have 4 projects (that are each as hard as two CS 31 projects) and 5 homeworks, plus some theoretical stuff that you have to self-study like searching/sorting algorithms, graph theory and template classes.

Does anyone have any good info or suggestions on the CS major’s requirement of 3 upper div science courses, and the technical breadth requirement (also 3 courses)? I’m kind of leaning away from the bio/chem stuff and would like to take something that will be worthwhile in the long-run. Any ideas or insights?

What do you think of the Engineering 110-112 series?

Engr110-112 is probably the most popular breadth…i’m planning on taking the series (but probably next year).

Choosing electives - this is a chance for you to enroll in classes that you’re interested in. I don’t know if there are any “easy” ones but any class that you’re interested in will be worthwhile in the long-run.

well according to bruinwalk, dyer seems insanely hard, so i guess people are steering away from the course next quarter (i’ve never taken it). i’ve taken cs180 - it’s a pretty interesting course but it’s the class i did the worst in so far. you’re either good at algorithm design…or completely crappy. i’d suggest you add on another class to your schedule (but i don’t know your future plans - like graduating in 4 years - and what classes you’ve taken already)

I was originally planning on taking CS111 with kohler next quarter (that’s why i saved it) but frigging new professor is teaching. haha.
i’m taking cs151b, cs111, IS30, ethics. so yeah i stacked on two non-major courses for cs111 as well…i’m going to prepare for the worst.

I agree with SSfren that all projects are doable, and besides, Professor Smallberg is very helpful and gives interesting lectures. Now that I’m taking CS 33 this quarter though, I honestly can’t remember if CS 32 was hard at all…

lol…CS 33 takes things to a whole new dimension…

For the upper div science courses, I tried to do math, but i got tired of more math…i decided to take design and tech courses…cause they seem fun
I first tried math simply because i thought it would look good with computer science…mistake! choose something u like…

hi guys

the recommended schedule for a EE major for the second quarter is:

english/chem
cs 32
math
physics 1a

I was wondering snce i dont want to take another cs class unitl 3rd quarter, can i take EE2(supposed to be taken in the 3rd quarter) instead of cs 32? Or is cs32 a prerequsite for ee3?

or maybe both english and chem instead of cs32(I rather have this choice)

I’m guessing u just took cs 31…The benefits of taking cs 32 right away is that the material is fresh in your mind from cs 31. It could be bad if you forget cs 31 in between quarters…

other than that, CS 32 isn’t a req for ee 2 or ee3…i don’t think ee 3 has any prereqs at all…

What do you guys think of my Winter classes?

-EE 102 - LEVAN, N.
-EE 110 - STAFSUDD, O.M.
-EE M16 - HE, L.

Question: How much of a programming background to you need for EE M16? I’ve only taken up to a cs31 equivalent course, btw.

TheEd,

You’re schedule is of medium difficulty.

IMO, EE M16 is harder than EE 102/110. Levan is known to be a good lecturer, but he doesn’t give out too many 'A’s. EE 110 will be your easiest class. Honestly, just read the book and do a bunch of problems. Stafsudd puts op-amp problems on his exams.

You don’t need any programming background for EE M16. It’s just digital logic design. The only thing you’ll need is to be able to do binary and be able to think logically.

You can add a GE or the Stats 105 class, assuming you’re an EE major.

I’m trying to decide on an MAE elective to take for winter quarter. I haven’t done any MAE electives yet. Which ones are cool? I don’t care about difficulty so much as what’s interesting.

MAE 166C: Design of Composite Structures- Interesting material, but a lot of note taking. Also make sure the TA assigned has taken this course before… Oh if it makes a difference, the is no curve in this class.
MAE 174: Probability and Its Applications to Risk, Reliability, and Quality Control- Don’t know much, but a lot of friends would skip out on the lectures for this one, so I guess it’s not a good course.
MAE 184: Introduction to Geometry Modeling- No midterm, no final. The 3-d modeling project using matlab can be a pain. You have a choice of which CAD software to use, but it’s best to get a group that all know the same one.
MAE 150C: Combustion Systems- don’t go near it. I’m warning you.
MAE 136:Energy and Environment- Friends say it’s a chill class.
MAE 133AL: Power Conversion Thermodynamics Laboratory- Grad students say it’s easy
MA 131A: Intermediate Heat Transfer- Might be on the difficult side, but the material is basically a rehash of MAE 105D. Only difference is the addition of boiling and numerical analysis.

150C is hard? lol I thought that sounded the coolest. Lame.

lol… i guess i should have been more clear on that. Only reason I said not to go near it is because of the professor. Just about every grad student and some under grads know to avoid him. This one of those times when bruinwalk is true.
