UCLA Engineering Q&A

i thought it was a pun.

Maybe someone could evaluate the upper div CS courses for those of us who haven’t taken them yet? Like the MAE classes above?

i am a transfer student applying to several schools as civil engineering, ucla being one of them

how do you think i’m looking in terms of admissions into ucla engineering

i will complete my math series in my jc
i have completed general courses at my jc
i will complete my physics series in a cal poly, pomona
i will take the first semester of chemsitry in my jc
i will take c++ in my jc

all this will be done by end of spring semester

gpa is 3.94

please give me feedback (any transfer students, speak up)!!!

What should I take for my third class?!?!?!?

I’m a first year EE and I am signed up for Physics 1A and Math 32B
I wanted to avoid Rohr, but then taking a GE is lame, and EEm16 (Potkonjak?) would be full of upperclassmen… what should I do?

Thank you! =D

oh, and i’m already taking chemistry and english

are you set on taking 3 classes? i’d recommend math33a and a GE (if you want to double on math). or if you don’t want 2 math, then EEm16 and a GE (doesn’t really matter if there are upperclassmen or not)

Which versions of Windows Vista are available through SEASnet?

business 32 bit and 64 bit i think… i remember trying to get it to put it on my mac then found out it required 15 gigs of harddrive instead of the 2 gig requirement for xp lol so i went with xp…

so im a 1st year EECE major at ucla and im wondering if this is a doable schedule for next quarter: cs 32, math 31b, physics (w/ corbin), and a GE. I keep hearing from everyone that cs 32 is hell. I’m taking cs 31 right now with no previous programming experience and it’s already pretty tough. I’m afraid if I take 4 classes I’m gonna just be going to class and studying for ten weeks straight (especially since one of them is cs 32). Any thoughts? Should I just drop the GE and take 3 classes?

^ Yeah, I have a similar question, I’m CSE, going to take exactly the same courses as you are (physics with corbin too), but instead of a GE, I need to take English Comp3.
Smallberg told us that CS32 is gonna be hell and if we have to take this next quarter, we better sign up for an extra class (4 classes total) so that if we find CS32 too time consuming, then we can either drop it or drop another one like a GE and still have 3 classes, satisfying the minimum credit.

quick question

for ee1, there were only waitlist spots left, so when signing up i tried to enroll like usual just to see if it would work, i input the course number (the number for the specific discussion with the wait list spot open) and entered it

it said if i went on wait list i’d be #4 for that discussion, so i said yea sure and enrolled

now how does the wait list work, am I fourth in line for the whole overall class? or am i fourth in line for that specific discussion of the class? like if they opened up more spots for the class would i maybe not get in because the spots were opened for other sections?

because i just want to get into the class period and could really care less what discussion i’m in, i just signed for that discussion cause it was the only one that said wait list and not closed next to it

edit: Or, am I already in the lecture section and all thats needed is for me to get into the discussion section? i’ve never done the wait list before

hey i dont even know where to ask this question but this seems appropriate.

how possible is it to get math33a from waitlist?

hows this schedule

math32b
math33a
physics 1b
engcomp 3

i’m a first year EE and haven’t taken CS31 yet either, heard Rohr sucked ass

I just posted this on the main forum, but would love you guys’ feedback too-

I’m a 2nd year MAE major trying to graduate in 4 years. Looks like I need to take something over the summer while working in the mornings and living at home.

I’d like to take the CS 31-equivalent over the summer. My local JC usually offers an ‘Intro to Computers & Info Systems’ class and an ‘Intro to Programming’ class over the summer. Not sure if either is the CS 31 equivalent.

Who do I talk to about making sure to get CS 31 credit for the class?

If the summer class is a bit light, will it come back to bite me in upper level MAE/Eng classes?

Should I try to take a FAH or FSC elective instead?

If so, is this too hard a schedule for the winter?
-MAE 102
-Phys 4AL
-Phys 4BL
-CS 31

Thanks!

any equivalent to CS31 must be an “Intro to C++” course, or something to that effect. if you want to make sure, you have to submit a course evaluation request to 6426 Boelter.

as far as i know, a “light” course in C++ won’t make a difference for upper-divs since you won’t actually use it, anyway…

That’s a pretty standard schedule for a freshman - so no, it’s not that hard of a quarter. If you do well in CS31, you should do similar in CS32. If CS31 was too hard for you…then well yeah, CS32 is going to be hell.

And for any CSE majors, you’re going to miss the CS30 series when you get to upperdivs…it’s not like it gets any easier

anyone know what book they use in physics 1A for pelle? I want to study ahead of time during winter break.

i am pretty sure all physics 1 series use the university physics book… but studying ahead… wow i wish i can be more like you :D

Im in HSSEAS, i know this is a silly question

is it possible to do a retroactive drop on a course this late in the game?

Here’s my reason: A professor didnt enroll into one of my other classes until the end of 7th week, thus making me unsure of my schedule. Even though i went to the class each day, i wasnt enrolled, and was unsure if i would be.
Note that the class i want to drop is not the above one.

Is that a good enough reason?

Is it crucial for an EE major to finish both of the intro to CS (cs31/32) classes before end of freshman year? As of right now, I’ve used my first pass to sign up for Physics 1A and Math 32B, but the rest of the classes I wanted to take, CS31 and EE3, have all filled up. Should I just wait to take those classes spring quarter and take other classes to fill up my schedule or is there a way to get myself into them? (PTE numbers or something?)

anyone know how being on the waitlist works? i’m on waitlist position 4 for an ee1 discussion and the class has 111 people in it. i emailed the professor for a pte and he said he’d send me one, so i’ll probably just move off of the waitlist that way, but if he ends up not sending me one, do they move all the people that they can from the waitlist to the actual class during like first week? or do they do it earlier or does everyone on the waitlist still need to get a pte number to get in

edit: and to the EE major, did you mean ee1? you probably want to get ee1 out of the way as soon as possible, i’m a CSE major and keep getting EE1 delayed so i cant take any other ee classes since its a prereq for all of them, imo take it as soon as you can to open up a ton of other classes
