fasttrack-
thx for ur answers!! u’re literally living my apple dream!! i hope someday i’ll work for apple too!! thank you for ur valuable insight!!

boelter-
I believe only ~3 students at most get admitted to MIT, Stanford, CIT for graduate school, after obtaining the B.S at UCLA.
rlly? so low? i am aiming to go to mit or stanford or maybe mba programs like hbs or wharton. will it really be impossible as an international as only so few get in to the selective schools? and 3 is out of how many?

madeinchina (LOLZ- nice name)-
plz plz do reply. and happy summer!! :)

thank you all of you for being so informative!!

Sorry, I am only referring to MAE students, and this is per year. There’ about 130-150 MAE grads per year. For MAE, actually 2-3 is a better estimate.

There may be more students who are admitted to these top schools in other engineering majors, perhaps in computer science.

The fact of the matter 2013, is that HBS, Stanford are very selective for MBA programs. In addition, you’ll have to work at the MINIMUM 2 years before applying. The average for UCLA Anderson is 5 years I believe. I mean, I have a friend who got into Yale, HBS, and Stanford’s MBA program for the 2+ program straight out of undergrad, but that is EXTREMELY rare.

With any of these top graduate schools, you will need to work extremely hard and be involved in either research, etc.

So what are you to do? Enjoy school, learn what you love and the things will fall into place if you keep your eyes out and are aware of the processes that you need to partake in to get to graduate school or a good MBA program.

Computer Science 32 — Introduction to Computer Science II
Mathematics 32B — Calculus of Several Variables
Mathematics 33A — Linear Algebra and Applications
Physics 4BL — Electricity and Magnetism Laboratory

I heard that CS32 is really hard…
How is this schedule? Should I reconsider it?

BTW: Which class does get waived by AP Physics C: Mechanics and E&M credits.
In the UCLA AP Credit website, it said General C…

I’m pretty sure no physics class gets waived by AP Physics C. I think you just get general credits which is what General C would stand for, which means all it does is give you units which count toward class standing.

Also, that schedule is fine I guess if you can successfully get into 4al your first quarter and then on top of that successfully get into 4bl. The labs fill up insanely fast, I’ve been waiting to get into 4bl for 2 quarters now since they fill up easily by first pass.

@UCLABruin

You can’t even take 33A your freshman quarter you can only pass out of 31A and 31B with AP Calc BC credit, so I’m going to assume you do that then you would have Math 32A instead of 33A. Other than that, if you replace 33A with 32A, that is what I took first quarter and its fine. CS1 is virtually no work.

Quick question, do we even have senior projects at UCLA? I hear about other schools and all types of majors at other schools having their senior projects and whatnot but I’ve never heard anything about it here. I’m a CS&E major if that matters, hopefully we don’t have one since I know nothing about it and I’m almost a junior haha.

*hi. i’m new to CC and will be coming to UCLA this fall as a computer science and engineering major. i have a few questions. i would be very thankful if you could answer these for me. thanks.

*what is the salary range for UCLA CSE graduates? what is the average salary?

*what kind of grad schools do UCLA CSE majors get into. please don’t just say good schools. i would appreciate if someone could provide details (x to A school- or majority to this school- or a 20 went to harvard…"

*what companies do CSE grads usually work for? (the best as well as the average)

*do undergraduates have research opportunities?

*what are some major related student groups i can join?

*is UCLA CSE well-respected in the east?

*does a UCLA CSE degree hold prestige?

*what classes should i take as a freshman? first quarter without any credit.

*is it possible to double major in CSE and math/econ or math or business eco and graduate in 4 yrs?

*do top companies (like sun, cisco, amazon, apple) hire UCLA CSE students as interns and then- as employees?

i know this is a long list- but plz plz plz plz answer them as much as you can. thxxxx.*

madeinchina, flopsy or anyone. plz plz plz answer my questions in detail. i am worrying much.

I think you can get out of Physics 1A with a 5 on AP Physics C (Mechanics). Well… I did at least… Unless they changed things this year…
E/M section just gets you 4 credits or something.

ooo and if Carey Nachenberg is still teaching CS 32 next year, be sure to take him in the Winter!

—>zero786
I really appreciate your reply! Could you tell me the year that you waived the credits?

I heard that Physics 4BL is really time consuming…
Will that be a pressure while taking together with CS32.

BTW, this is my freshmen schedule:

(I took AP Comp Sci AB, Chemistry, Calculus BC,*[Assuming that they waived my credits]AP Physics C Mechanics & E/M, and have some knowledge in Objective-C)

Computer Science 31
Mathematics 32A
Physics 1B — Oscillations, Waves, Electric and Magnetic Fields

Physics 4AL — Mechanics Laboratory

*I am taking GEs and Eng Comp in Community College

There are more time consuming lab courses, but this one will be a shock to some students compared to 4AL. The report requirements are getting shorter and shorter (down to only about 15-20 pages now). This is not much compared to 60-70 page weekly deliverables in an upper division lab I have taken.

I believe it is performing the experiment procedure correctly that is more difficult than writing the report, unless you have no idea what happened during the experiment. But now, the TAs are just doing the experiment, and students are just repeating the procedure, which allows students to get out of the lab faster.

I spent about 10-15 hours per week writing the reports and reading the experiment theory in advance. It might take you less time because the requirements are more relaxed now (you might not even have to read and understand the theory if you don’t want to anymore).

Are simultaneous degrees compatible with the engineering majors? For example, what if I want to pursue an engineering degree along with one in, say, Physics?

^^^Yeah!! Same question! Except I’m thinking of going for Comp. Sci & Engg + either Mathematics or Math/Econs or Business Econs. So is that a possible? (Considering that I HAVE to graduate in 4 years and will probably have summer internships). I don’t mind overloading myself- if they allow me to do that (I sound like such a desperate nerd! haha!) Plus- any common classes in the majors? (the ones above??) :)
