Yeaaah… I think I got a pity pass in 1B… Anyways, thanks. Better “review” my butt off.

How you rate all the core CS classes (in the scale of 10) based on it difficulty and time consuming:
CS31/32/33/35L
CSM51A/M151B/M152A/152B
CS111/118/131/180/181/130

I know it’s a lot, but I just want to compare and plan my schedule for future quarters

CS31 5/10
CS32 7/10
CS33 7/10 (w/ Reinman)
CS35l 6.5/10
CSm51a 6/10 (w/ Ercegovac)
CS111 10/10 (Prepare to put in alot of work for this class. It’s extremely rewarding if you do.)
CS180 7/10

Guys I’m a bit confused… UCLA has academic counselor, facility adviser, and all these different counselors. Can anyone help me explain what each do?

Academic counselor: [Counselors — UCLA Engineering Office of Academic and Student Affairs](http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/undergraduates/counselorsd)
If you have questions about credit transfer, need advise on which courses to take and schedule planning, need papers signed, academic questions, go to your academic counselor in BH 6426.

Faculty advisor: Not much use for the undergraduate level. It was recently asked by the dean that faculty meet with undergraduates at least once a quarter. Just to see how they are doing in the program, show some direction, and have a conversation to learn more about the student. The meeting are no more than what you make it to become. You can talk about research opportunities with the advisor or discuss your career plans.

At the graduate level, still useless. Might be useful for those doing the non-thesis option since it could be on of the rare times you get contact with a professor out of class.

Personally I don’t think you can interact enough with a professor unless you are doing research with him/her.

Hello, CC!

I was just wondering if I should skip out of physics 1a. I got a 5 on the APC mech, so I can if I wanted to.

However, my friends are warning me that doing so will be harmful to my GPA.

Is it hard? I don’t see how 1B really stacks on top of 1A.

I am confident in my abilities concerning Mechanics and E&M as well.

Plus, I’ll be taking Whitten (!Corbin), so I think that I should be okay.

What do you guys think?

Thank you!

I would suggest skipping the class if you’re comfortable with the material. Taking classes you don’t need to could also be harmful to your GPA (since you still have to work for a grade) and is generally a waste of time/money if you already know what’s going on.

You should always skip a class if you get the chance.

Agreed with the two above posts.

Thank you for your fast replies!
I will petition out soon.

May I ask another question?

What do you guys think of this for winter quarter:

cs32 (nachenberg!)
math 32b (prolly w/ Micheli; he’s a good teacher for me)
physics 4AL (Slater)
*some random GE (~geography 5??)

Perfect? Hard but doable? Suicide!?

Thanks.

^ Looks doable to me. Though just be aware that CS32 and 4AL may suck out all your time. 4AL’s not hard, just time consuming. I haven’t taken CS32, but if it’s anything like CS31, I would just guess it takes a lot of time as well.

Definitely not on the scale of academic suicide, since you have that GE as a GPA buffer. (Unless you take one that takes up all your time.) If you had like another core science/math class… maybe… but even then…

oh no!

I just noticed that physics 1B is a forced pre-req to physics 4al. Should I petition? I really don’t see why that’s being enforced right now.

Ok. It looks like I need to take another class… any suggestions?

I would take math 61 but I’m really bad at probability :((

cs 35L sounds fun! I’m comfortable with linux, so the class shouldn’t be too hard… (and I LOVE software construction!)

But I can still take chem 20 (don’t want to; hate chemistry with all my heart), or english comp 3.

What to do?

thanks!

Don’t worry, I took 4al before 1b without any problems or petitioning.

So should I take 4al instead of CS 35L? Which one is more time consuming?

If you’re comfortable with Linux, you can finish most of the assignments in class. 4AL has lab reports that take some time.

I’m not a virtuoso, but I’ve used ubuntu for a while… I want to devote a lot of time to cs32 because I really want to understand data structures (especially binary trees).

But yeah, I think I wanna take Physics 4AL in the spring with a friend, so cs 35l looks like the best class to take. Any other suggestions?

Also, I’m planning on taking courses over the summer at a local community college. Would taking three classes be hard? It is in the summer time, so things will probably go quickly, right? I’m planning on taking chem 20a, math 61, and eng 3.

Sound good?

Thanks again! very happy i found this forum

sorry for this double post, but I can’t edit my last comment any more :(

Anyway, is Nachenberg hard to get into? I’m not one of those kids coming in with 9438593485034985093485094385 credits who’ll graduate in like… a quarter.

Should I be okay as long as I sign up for his class on my first pass?

thanks again!

You can see how 3 classes goes at a community college. Drop one if it turns into too much work. Make sure you don’t have too many units though, or else UCLA won’t let you transfer credit.

You should be able to get into Carey’s class 1st pass. Even if you don’t, I’m sure he’ll help you get into the class once the quarter starts.

do you guys know when the list of TA’s will be out?

I heard that Darrell is a good TA for cs 35L.
Are there any other TA’s that you guys would recommend?

Thanks!

edit: could you guys also recommend some good ge’s? I thought of taking A&A10, but it conflicts w/ nachenberg :(

Darrell graduated recently. I had Mike Le when I took the class (2 years ago) and he was pretty good.
