I took CS 130 and 180 together the first quarter I took upper divs (not counting 199). It was manageable; I spent more time on the terrible GE I took with those classes.

Quick question: CS CM124 counts as an upper division computer science elective for CS&E majors right? Even though its kind of crosslisted.

Is CS130 a hard class? Would it be a bad idea to take CS 131 and CS 130 at the same time?

131 and 130 are two of the most time-consuming classes in the department, but it’s not unreasonable to take them together given that your other classes aren’t too bad.

130 has a quarter-long group project and if you take it with Eggert, there are reading assignments and weekly quizzes. It’s less work with Majumdar, but he’s in Germany this year.

Ok, I’m in a little bit of a predicament.
I’m a Freshman and I’m planning on applying to change my major to either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. Fall Quarter I took Chem 14a and Math 31B because I thought I was going to be pre-med but I still wanted to take real math. This quarter I switched to 3C because I decided to commit to being pre-med and I didn’t want to screw up my GPA by taking classes that were unnecessarily hard. I’m also taking Chem 14b. I’ve been flip flopping on whether or not I want to be an engineer but finally decided I want to so next quarter I’m planning on taking Math 32a, 33a, Physics 1a, and maybe Stats 13 for the life science GE. I have two main questions: 1) How do I petition to get Chem 20a credit for Chem 14A? Do I have to wait until I get accepted to the major? and 2) If I take the approved equivalent of Chem 20B and Chem 20BL at my local junior college this summer will it be easier for me to get Chem 20A credit for 14A?
Also, it says that if you’re a first year you need to complete two math and two science requirements before applying- does the life science GE count as a science requirement and if so if I apply to change majors during the summer am I still considered a first year? Because I would really like to make the change official as soon as possible.
Side note- My GPA is 3.8 if it makes any difference and I got an A in the only Engineering pre-req I’ve taken (Math 31B).
Thanks for the help!

I’m a math major interested in taking CS 180. Does anyone know what the process is for getting into the class if I’m taking the PIC series? Or does anyone know where I can go to talk to a counselor about this? The CS department website isn’t very helpful…

Ostrovsky should be math-friendly, but you probably shouldn’t ask him about a PTE until after second pass – he’s not supposed to let you in if it keeps a CS major out. If the class hasn’t filled up, you may be fine.

Thanks. How much programming knowledge will I need to make the course doable?

(Sorry for the late reply.) This may be moot, since CS 180 is now full, but you don’t need the programming part of CS 31/32 or PIC 10ABC as much as the understanding of the data structures and algorithms you get in those classes. CS 180 is very mathy, and depending on the quarter, may not have any programming at all. If it does have any, it’s to illustrate some point about the algorithms, so the programs are very small and don’t use any fancy language features.

Thanks for the response. I had a schedule conflict for this quarter anyway but I was wondering about future quarters, so no worries about the timing.

I’m taking ee10 next quarter with Gupta and he has pretty bad ratings on bruinwalk. Are these ratings fair? What have your experiences been with him?

I’ve heard some bad things about Gupta i.e. he can’t teach worth a damn. Avoid him.

How about zhang for cs118? Also it says that 111 is a req for 118, is this true? Everyone tells me it’s not.

I’ve just been admitted to UCLA as a certain major. Does that mean I am automatically in that major?

If you’re in the major, yes. If you’re pre-thatmajor, no.

I haven’t taken Zhang for CS 118, but I have heard her lecture, and she has a very thick accent. 118 is easy anyway, though, so it won’t really matter. You definitely don’t need 111.

I know on the first page you answered that materials engineering wasnt strong, however that was 5 years ago so how has the program developed and increased in size?

Also, same questiom: How hard is it to switch majors, and is it possible to do so before I even attend the school?

hi. I’ve been accepted to UCLA for electrical engineering. I would like to know about the research programs , both summer progs. and otherwise, which are relevant. (specifically those for which an international student would be eligible.)

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what EE115C is like? Markovic is teaching next quarter. Is this class really tough? as tough as CS 111 and 131? I’ve heard that the projects in EE 115C are very time consuming… were they all group projects? Will I have to make sure that I have set aside enough time to meet up with my groups? I’m planning to take 4 classes next quarter with EE115C included, and I’m wondering if this will be feasible…

Thank you!

Hi, I’ve been admitted as a Computer Science and Engineering major but I’m not sure if I want to change to just Computer Science. What are the job benefits of both majors and which one would be more difficult?
