UCLA Engineering Q&A

If I get a 5 on AP cal AB, I can choose to skip math 31A right guys ? I’m really confused because it doesn’t say anything about skipping 31A if I get a 5 on cal AB on the wesite AP credit for engineering school.

If you get a 5 on the AB exam you can skip Math 31A if you want to, or you can take Math 31A. They leave it up to you.

is it really that hard to change majors within the school of engineering? some guy told me it’s very easy to change majors within the same school and that he’s done it about 6 or 7 times. all he had to do was fill out some form. what do we have to do specifically to change our major?

I think for engineering, you’ll have to write a short essay detailing why you want to switch. It’s relatively easy to switch into or within Letters and Science, however, so if I had to guess, the person you mentioned was probably in L&S.

thank you very much!

@alicantekid: Thank you !!!

How hard would it be to switch from pre-business economics to materials engineering?

I was accepted to UCLA for bioengineering, but I’d really like to switch to either aerospace or mechanical engineering. How feasible would this be, and can I do this before the school year starts? Just asking because I’ve read that bioengineering is one of the weaker engineering majors at UCLA and I know they’re ranked highly in aerospace. Thanks!

It’s feasible; switching within engineering is usually not a big deal. You can try to switch before you get in, and if you do, then they’ll basically review your profile as if you were applying from that major from the start. If you have the qualifications, they’ll let you switch. Most (if not all) of the people I know who have tried this were successful.

Even if you’re not successful initially, all you have to do is take a quarter or two of classes, do well, then petition again.

Great, thanks so much for the help! :)

Hey grapesoda, thank you very much for your information! It was very helpful!
@Usernamedeleted: thanks for those threads and info!

Hello, I have a rather strange question. Is it possible for the student to use digital textbook on such devices as ipad or kindles, instead of the paper ones which are both costly and bulky? Thank you!!

please help me in deciding between GeorgiaTech, UCLA for MS in CS.
i am currently undecided about my specialization. I am undecided about Phd aspirations, but i think i would be mostly be working.

Gatech:
+better brandname
+best ranking
+larger no of courses
+good internships and jobs
-not so selective

UCLA:
+good ranking.
+location (California)
+good internships and jobs
+selective
-slightly lower ranking and brandname than Gatech (not sure abt it)

Please post your opinions about the same.

What is your deadline? Have you visited both campuses? Which one looks like the better fit location-wise?

In terms of ranking and brandname, they’re not that different (both are top 15 and neither is top 5). California is a great place to live and work, and everyone knows about UCLA here. GT is popular among companies here as well, though. I’m sure that you would be in good shape after attending either. Probably the best thing you can do is talk to professors and see what each school can offer you.

Also, if either one offers a course that the other does not, and you really want to work in that area, then that might be a reason to choose that school. Course offering differences don’t matter if you don’t plan to actually take that course.

Another thing to consider is that course requirements for an MS at UCLA are unrelated to specialization. That’s good for people who want breadth because there are very few restrictions on course selection. I’m not sure what it’s like at GT, so you might want to look into that.

i am from india. hence visiting the campus isnt a feasible option.
and i have to reply within 2 days, so no time to contact profs either!

I just edited my post above because my phone kept submitting it imcomplete.

One thing I can add, though, is that you can finish UCLA’s MS program in 1 year if you have equivalent breadth courses from your undergrad (most people do). If you want to get to work quickly, it’s something to consider.

thanks for the reply.

i did contact a few seniors from ucla. most of them replied with ucla is very good and so in gatech. i got similar replies from ppl at gatech as well.

however 1 senior at ucla replied as follows
"I would rate Georgia Tech much better than UCLA. You will have much wider options
over there. They have groups working in wide number of areas and you will therefore have much more options to choose from. "

I had decided on UCLA- but this reply confused me a lot.

btw how much does it cost on a avg to complete a MS at UCLA?

http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/gss/library/1011gradfees.pdf</a> (PDF)

Looks like it’s about $27,000 per year for nonresident students. That does not include housing, which is not very inexpensive in this area.

There’s probably some truth in what that person said, but it’s not as bad at UCLA as he claims. I would have returned to UCLA if I had not been admitted to a top 5 program.

Does AP credit satisfy General Education requirements for Engineering at UCLA? I have looked through UCLA’s website ([AP Credit - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/apcredit.htm)). According to the website, AP credit does not satisfy GE requirements for the College of Letters and Science ([AP Credit - College of Letters and Science - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/APCreditLS.htm)), but the website says nothing with regards to the engineering school.

In the past, AP exams like Macroeconomics and Spanish have been able to fulfill various categories. Here’s this year’s catalog: http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/admissions/hsseas-announcements/hsseas-announcement-pdf/Engr10-1.pdf</a></p>

There are some rumors that AP credit would no longer be applicable to GEs, but I cannot confirm this since next year’s catalog has not yet been released.
