UCLA Engineering Q&A

how would we get experience?
check out a book?

yeah…

earlier in the thread, i mentioned a book. How to Learn C++ in 21 Days or something like that. i think the author is Jones. you just need to get your own compiler.

thanks citan

also 2 out of 3 essays that I read for CS 1 said they learned BASIC at a young age o.0

1st year here. I’m currently in Letters and Science but a few weeks ago had the strong urge to switch into ME and I’m pretty sure that’s what I wanna do. BUT my 1st quarter grades are NOT that great. (math31A: C+, chem20a: B-). am i out of luck for transferring? should I even bother with an application this quarter, or will i be rejected outright?

if I don’t get in this quarter, but have better grades next quarter, will i have a chance then? or should i just give up on the engineering ambitions and find some other major in letters and science? please advise. THANKS.

this is what the engineering website says in regards to admissions:

I would agree; he teaches both courses and is slated to teach 103 again next quarter. If you have him, go to recitations to maximize your learning.

Does anyone have the MAE 182A book they want to sell? (Elementary DE by Boyce)

If I recall, did flopsy or zero123 someone else say that the book isn’t needed

You would kinda need the book for MAE 182A to do the HW. But then again, if you have Bernie, the book is useless. I aced the midterm and raped the final without ever reading the book. I feel sorry for you if you have Murphy in the morning for this class. lol

automath:

Is the book the paperback edition? Like this one?
[Half.com / Books / Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems](<a href=“Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles & More | eBay”>Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles & More | eBay)

It’s not too expensive, so I think I’ll get it. Unfortunately, Bernie isn’t TA-ing for 182A, he’s doing 103. He is okay, except that he speaks so fast that I think his sound waves come out at Ma>1 . :P

Isn’t 182A an easy class anyways? A review of 33B and some more complicated DEs?

The 182A book is total garbage, so don’t bother reading it too much or not at all. Is 182A easy? Well I guess it depends on the prof. I had Chatterjee (not his son), so it wasn’t too bad. Also textbooks are useless in any course that he teaches. I thought 182 was semi useless, it’s pretty much a review of the DE course you already took. But the review is good since you’ll be using the material in courses like 171, 107 etc.

BTW to anyone that is taking MAE 103 next quarter, Diss section B is a waste of time.

does anyone know why classes like math32b, cs118, or csM151b shows up under honors content in Degree Progress Report?

heins,

if you want to switch to ME, then you should definately apply

heins, from what i’ve heard, if your gpa is 3.70, you’re in

If you are entering into a college of engineering, do they ask you to buy a specific laptop?

no there’s no specific laptop to buy. Although, I feel like a PC would make it easier to get through all the programing (I may be wrong).

For those who have taken Math 61:

do we have to buy the **Discrete Source/b textbook from the UCLAstore?

or can we find some type of regular edition online that’s basically the same thing but for a cheaper price?

thanks grark :)

how would be the difficulty rating of the following classes. EE1, EE2, EE10, EE102, EE103, CS31, CS32, CS33, CS35L, MATH 32 A/B, MATH 33 A/B

flopsy, for my math32b class with kucherenko, there are 4 discussions with 30 spots each; mine has only 9 out of 30 spots filled while the other three have around 20 people in them each. do they cancel discussions if there aren’t enough people in them?

has anyone gotten their ee1 grade yet?!?!

Yes, they cancel discussions if there aren’t enough people in them, but 9/30 isn’t low enough. The threshold to cancel a discussion is more like < 5/30.
