UCLA Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@GoodAfternoonSir It was a bit funny as I dropped one class when I decided to go to UCI. They do not require IGETC. I just wanted to get rid of the class I do not need and spend more time with my daughter whereas preparing for my citizenship application. Then I got into UCLA. So far IGECT is not their requirement, just high recommended, then I do not think I report the change will cause it to be revoked. But based on their policy, I would have to take 1 course this summer to complete IGETC so that I do not have to take GE course in UCLA. Yesterday I saw some students with 4.0 and completed IGETC in the waiting list, I am not sure my admission would be affected by this change or not. Just wait for their reviewing process which may take up to 15 business days.

However, I thought I would travel abroad this summer after 2.5 years working super hard. If UCLA does not revoke their admission for me, I then have to cancel my trip and go to school in summer. What a fate.

From my own case, I think UCLA may benefits you better. Good luck.

@Bibihcmvn Depending on what class you need to take to fulfill IGETC, you don’t have to take a class per say, you can take an exam instead where you only need a 62.5% to pass and get credit. These are called CLEP exams and they’re offered by the college board. They’re accepted by my community college and can be used to certify IGETC. Check in with your community college and see if they work for you.

Just google “Clep exams” and you’ll see a page linking to the college board website where you can register.

I really encourage you to enroll in UCLA and I don’t want you to be discouraged just by one single class. This way, you just need to take the exam and get a D- to get credit on it. Plus, the class isn’t reported as a letter grade, it’s just shown as Pass if you decide to send your score to your community college. This way, you have nothing to lose from trying this, you can only be benefited from taking the exam. Now you don’t even need to take a class in the summer to fulfill IGETC should you choose to attend UCLA.

I wish you all the best!

@CalAlumandDad Currently I’ve been accepted to the following colleges:

Accepted: CSUSF (California State University, San Francisco), CSUS (California State University, Sacramento), UC Davis, USF (University of San Francisco)

Waitlisted: Cal Poly San Luis Opisbo

Rejected: UC Berkeley, UCLA, San Diego State

Waiting: USC, UCI

I’m so happy I got in!!! Is anyone else so confused between Berkeley or UCLA?

@GoodAfternoonSir oh my goodness, thanks for your info.

I need one subject in area 3, 3A or 3B. I planned to take a Dance class for 3A in this summer.

When I google Clep exam, it seems I have to study all subjects in Humanity field to take the test even though I am so bad in Art. Do you have any advice for preparing the test for Humanity area? Thanks in advance.

@uclaletmeinpls Almost definitely going to UCLA. When I was a kid I dreamed of going to UCLA, but after a sort of wild ride in life I started to believe college wasn’t really in the cards for me. When I finally decided to get my life together and enrolled in community college it was the school that I set my sights on as an ideal destination. After everything, I can’t believe I actually made it.

We should link up. It would be good to have someone coming from a similar place (at least relative to the majority of the UCLA student body) to collaborate with.

@Bibihcmvn So I’m assuming you completed Area 3A and just need one class to fulfill 3B? For my IGETC requirements in my college, I need to complete 2 classes related to Arts and Humanities to fullfill 3A and 3B.

CLEP offers a study guide for the Humanities CLEP exam. It’s 10$ and it has what you need to prepare for the exam. Honestly, no need to sweat too much, if you want to over prepare then just study for a week and take the exam. You just need a D- average and the exam isn’t difficult in my opinion.

Good Luck!

@GoodAfternoonSir Thanks a lot. Im going to see a walk-in counselor right now.

I finished Music but it was for CSU. For UC transferable, I only took Theatre and Philosophy - Ethics. I need one class from any of those.

After checking the website, I may take the Clep exam for Composition (Poem) because that was the class I just drop since I was tired of writng too many essays from super short poems…hihi… Now I will ask my counselor if that Composition exam can work for my case. Thanks a lot. Really want to invite you a coffee.

@bananahrr yes my D received the alumni scholarship email today.

GoodAfternoonSir - If your appeals don’t work, I take it you’ll go to UC Davis (great school)? I’m glad you have options, despite your disappointment.

@transfergal2019 Congrats! I’m also an anthro major and deciding between UCB and UCLA is a tough one, UCLA’s program is what all my professors prefer but they’re both excellent regardless.

@CalAlumandDad Depends if:
A) I get into USC
B) the financial aid package for USC is good.

If I don’t get either A or B, then yeah i’ll head to Davis for Managerial Econ. I never wanted to go to davis personally because I’ve visited there many times and I wasn’t into the vibe over there. I really like Berkeley or UCLA because there are many opportunities given to Haas or Bus-Econ students assuming they perform successfully. I know that you need to work for those opportunities and I could indeed have the same opportunities at Davis, but It’s just easier for me at UCLA or Berkeley in my opinion. I can’t stress enough how bad I would like to attend Berkeley because I imagined myself as a “golden bear” and dreamed that I was in the school for many nights (yeah i’m a bit delusional haha).

@biscuit4reggie it’s a tough choice! But a great problem to have??. Will he check out the Bruin day for transfers May 11? We are. We looked at campus on our own 2 years ago but she was 17 . Being 19 now and looking at it as an admit, plus tours etc will give her a better idea of it all. Update us when your S decides where he will attend?.

I just got the email to apply for housing. I was not aware that UCLA guaranteed housing to transfers for their first year. Nice! Too bad I would have to pay for housing out of pocket. I am probably better off becoming roommates with two friends I have in LA.

I am still shocked that UCLA is even giving me enough to help cover most of my tuition, even with the out of state fees. I am definitely planning stuff out now in case I decide to commit.

@GoodAfternoonSir my CCC does not accept exam for IGETC. So I think just see what UCLA counselor say. But based on their Policy, they do say that IGETC is not required. They even made a tips that student can take course in summer prior to transfer to fulfill IGETC.

Does anybody have similar experience?

So far, I have about 119 units.

@Bibihcmvn Sign a petition declaring that you would like to take an exam to fulfill a class at your CCC for Pass/No Pass. I’ve done this before personally to fulfill an IGETC requirement. Talk to your counselor about this.

@GoodAfternoonSir my counselor showed me. They do take credit by exam, but Just NOT for IGETC. However, he said CSU will accept it for GE but UCs does not.

@GoodAfternoonSir IGETC will take AP or IB exam. I have no idea if I should because it seems like a hard one. Just see. Maybe UCLA just let me enjoy the Dance class this summer. Then it would be super easy.

@sugarcane1 Not doing Bruins transfer day. Too close to finals for him. I’ll let you know where he lands. I’m glad I’m not a college student these days. It’s insane what is asked of these applicants.

Any Psych majors not going to UCLA?
