UCLA Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@CalBear1998 Correct. IGETC certification will be done by my community college by way of my H.S. official transcripts (which i was surprised were so easy to get, considering I graduated HS in 2010) eek

Does anyone have a close guess to when the decisions will come out or do you know if they will notify us a few days prior?

@polisci444 People have been guessing either the 17th or the 24th, and they’ll most likely give us a 1-2 day heads up. We’ll also probably see the website crash for a bit and that will clue us in to them sending the decisions.

If they’re going to send out the decisions before Berkeley (19th) then they’ll go for the 17th but they have so many apps to go through and usually they submit around the 24/25/26 area so it could be then too.

To any fellow Communication majors who are TAP certified,

I just found out from my counselor that TAP doesn’t apply to Communications since the department reviews the applications, rather than the College of Letters and Sciences. I wish I had known this earlier.

However, if you did put an alternate major then TAP would apply to that.

@littlemissmel I was TAP certified but I still don’t know exactly what it does beneficially. Do you know?

@polisci444 You get super enhanced admissions chances to UCLA for the college of letters and science. At the presentation my school held for briefing honors students on the TAP certification, they reported to us that supposedly 70% of the students that they TAP certified were accepted to UCLA. Some of the other posters may tell you higher numbers, which could be true! The other main benefit is that UCLA will consider your alternate major as long as it is in the college of letters and science and is non impacted; they actually don’t consider it unless you are TAP certified, so you essentially get two tries if your primary major is also L&S. The one thing to keep in mind is that it technically doesn’t help you with admission for your primary major if your primary major is for engineering or something outside of L&S, however, such applicants can still be admitted for their alternate as long as it is in L&S and non impacted.

So language/linguistics majors I just got off the phone with admissions. I asked if my high school Spanish courses would count as one year of college level. They told me no, that the primary language of the entire high school needs to be in Spanish. If you took spanish as a second language in high school you would need to petition to your college to give you the college credit.

@Princetonian9 I think your good since you passed with all As in your French courses. My counselor has explained that as long as you pass your HS language class that equates for college credits. The only reason I am taking two semesters of a language in college is bc I got a D in high school Spanish

@Randapanda126 Do you think that community colleges would give unit credit for four years of high school language without an AP test? I also called them and received a similar response. In addition to what you stated, they also said a third level language course at community college would fulfill this requirement.

@lcsucla My community college certified my language credit when they processed my IGETC certification. Area 6 gives the following options to complete this: ?

–Completion of two years of foreign language in high school with a grade of “C” or better. (OR)
?–Performance on foreign language proficiency tests administered at a campus of the UC. (OR)
?–Earn a score of 550 on an appropriate College Board Achievement Test. (OR) ?–Satisfactory score, 3 or higher, on the College Board Advanced Placement examinations in languages other than English. (OR)
?–Satisfactory score, 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examinations in languages other than English.

I am not, however, a language or linguistics major so this only really helps to cover the basic second language requirements.

Or you can take classes at a CC, these are just the alternative routes available. I did have to show my counselor and she had to ask a supervisor even though the route I took is clearly spelled out. Certification through high school coursework shouldn’t be at all unusual though.

@Randapanda126 what you are saying is NOT correct. There are rules regarding language in high school. Two years of a language course (same language) equals one year of college language. There’s no disputing that and what you’re saying has been misinterpreted by someone. Now I have no idea what rules are in place for language/linguistic majors and certainly one would expect more language needed, but what you’re saying is inaccurate and I feel obligated to correct that up here. If what you’re saying were the rule no one would be able to complete IGETC. Think about it. No language counts unless you studied in Germany? No language counts unless you were at a French school?

see Point E:
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/a-g-requirements/index.html

BTW, reread: they aren’t going to give you college credit (meaning units) for the courses. They just mark it as fulfilling one year.

Anyone go to the Imagine Arts open house today?

@Ohm888 AFAIK what you are saying about language is totally correct for IGETC and for college credit in general, but I believe they are discussing the language pre reqs for linguistics and language majors. Those majors do in fact have a line describing going to a school where the primary language was not english. That link you sent appears to be the A-G requirements, and the HS language would totally work for college credits in general, but the lang+ling majors have something a bit more specific.
http://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/lsmajors/ling%26lan.htm
In the line discussing the prereqs: “Completion of at least one year of high school in which the primary language of instruction was the selected language may be substituted for lower division language preparation”

@ohm88 I am just repeating what the UCLA advisor said to me on the phone specifically for language majors. It is beyond standard IGETC requirements.

@Randapanda126

From the UCLA linguistics page. ^^^

Since two years of hs language = one year of college, and you say you need to petition it at the CCC, wouldn’t IGETC certify it, since IGETC is certifying that applicant has one year of college language?

This is where I am confused. Maybe I’m missing something. Or maybe you’re saying the same thing. Sorry if that’s the case. ?

Keep in mind, most of the advisors at the UCs don’t know the ins and outs of CCC rules.

I attended the Ucla image arts open house today and was told transfer student decisions would be release the 24th

@butterflyclip Thanks for the info. Who at the event told you? Were they a part of the admissions staff? Not doubting you, just want to clarify about the source

That’s a bad news…sad

@mpineda3247 Mmmmm some courses or even programs at some high schools literally teach the class in that language. I did the ib program and the instruction of the class was entirely in French. How is that any different. I wouldn’t imagine they are referring to an entirely French based school.
