Yes, my child is interested in pursuing film scoring (thus the other question about the Pacific Northwest program)…

Would anyone have any information about UCLA’s certificate in film scoring? It seems geared toward working adults but would anyone know if it would be appropriate for a student? Thanks.

There are many threads on this Forum with advice for students interesting in composing for film. Most programs are oriented towards grad students except for areas like Performing Arts Technology at Univ. of Michigan which is a combination of recording arts and composing. (There is a very knowledgeable poster on here about that!)

There are also trade schools, but not many of us know much about those. Also, the contemporary music schools such as Berklee and Belmont offer something, I believe. UCLA is oriented for grad students. USC and NYU as well. Our collective advice here is generally to have your child learn the fundamentals of music and composition, and perhaps recording and filmmaking, as an undergrad, and specialize later.

Greetings, Pianomom12. I am quite possibly the poster to which SpiritManager is referring. My s. is highly interested in film scoring among other types of composition, electronic composition and production. We searched high and low prior to finding UMich’s program and generally found it to be a nice mix of deep core training/talent development with very specific technical training that has myriad applications. Which is not to say it’s film or even scoring specific – (rightly) the scoring-specific programs at the higher level (as opposed to trade schools) are suited to people with an undergrad music degree, most often in composition. My son is very happy at UMich’s School of Music. Here’s a link to the specific curriculum he selected to meet film-related demands while balancing music and compositon generally: [UM School of Music, Theatre & Dance - Department of Performing Arts Technology - Degree Programs](http://www.music.umich.edu/departments/pat/bfa_curr_b)
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers,
K

kmccrindle – Thanks so much for the input. Being relatively new to CC, could you tell me how to respond to you privately? I’ve responded to others but have never generated an individual CC e-mail before.

Pianomom12, left click on k’s name in the post above yours, and a drop down menu appears. Your options are shown, just click the one you want (pm or email).
