UCLA Honors Program

Ok, yeah i didn’t get it… or get nominated because I’m like 10 pts away from the required SAT score…

Is this program really important for pre-med?? Ugh. annoyed
edit

i know you can join later… but … gah

For pre-med? No, you should worry about your science GPA, overall GPA, and research experiences and volunteering.

This is probably a dumb question but does math count in your science GPA?

Yes it does. It’s BCPM, biology, chemistry, physics, math.

What mme-lin said. Plus MCAT.

Honors doesn’t matter at all grade-wise, transcript-wise, etc. What’s great about Honors are the more intimate seminars you can take, which may lead to increased interaction with your professor and a better letter of recommendation.

I thought the acronym was STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)? o_0

ive never heard of STEM before in my life. did you just randomly make that up??? or is it some engineer thing?

No, I’m positive it’s BCPM

Maybe it’s a life science thing? IDK, I’ve only heard of it as being called STEM. Anyway, both are valid I guess, maybe?

i also have a question about the honors program.

i am eligible to apply. i have a 2080 SAT and a 4.4 GPA.
if you are eligible, does that mean you will for sure make it in? or do they only select the top applicants?

also, my major is mechanical engineering. i know its only for the college of L&S, so is it still worth it to be in honors? do you have to take honors courses? or can i just take regular courses and use the priority enrollment?

thanks!

You can’t get Honors! duh! Besides, it’s not worth it! Just worry about having the highest GPA.

youre actually not eligible to apply

[Admission to College Honors](http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/honors/freshman.html)
All incoming freshmen must be admitted into the UCLA College of Letters & Science in order to qualify for admission into the College Honors Program. (**Students admitted to the following schools are not eligible for our program ** at this time: School of Arts and Architecture, School of Theater, Film, and Television, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and School of Nursing.)

ah ok.
thanks i must have missed that.

well nothing to worry about then :]

Well, I think BCPM is an AMCAS/Med school thing, while STEM is an engineering thing.

At the Honors Day reception, the officers told us the essay was only a formality; if you are qualified/invited to an Honors Day, if you don’t write something totally outrageous (“Why UCLA sucks” or something like that), you will get in.

It would be nice to have…did you try applying with the top 3% of your school option? It’s really in your best interest to try and get it before you enter cuz someone from UCLA told me it’s harder to get in in the following years. REalllly easy to drop it, but hard to get it…

But like yea I heard if you qualify, it’s basically guaranteed.
