S24 just got this in his email. Just when he was having withdrawn symptoms from not having anything to do, here is an opportunity to write more essays.
" As a UCLA applicant, you are invited to apply for one of the university’s recruitment scholarships, renewable for-up to four years for incoming freshman and two years for incoming transfers.
Please note that this invitation to apply for these scholarships does not constitute an offer of admission nor does it infer any likelihood of admission.
… and the first round of winner notifications will be included on the Provisional Aid Letter within 2-3 weeks of the release of Admission Decisions. Further scholarships will continue to be offered to incoming students throughout the summer.
My son got the email too. Question: Wasn’t there a section of the application in which the student could opt to be considered for some of these scholarships? I remember my son filling out info and checking boxes. We’re trying to figure out if going through a separate scholarship application is redundant.
Yes, there is a section on the UC application where can opt in to receive information regarding scholarships so that is why he received the email. There are only a few UC scholarships that are automatically given using the UC application information. Many require additional essays to apply.
On the application, your son had the option to check boxes for certain demographics that applied to him. Those are for scholarships that are based upon the UC application. For example, there could be an entity that is awarding scholarships to twins from Tulare County, studying anthropology at UCLA. If your son fit that classification, when he is accepted, he might receive notification that he received a scholarship.
The Alumni Association scholarship is different. It is not based on the UC application. They have their own application which is why students received the email asking them to apply.
My son clicked link for scholarship essay, i think that alumni and this have same topic essays . Alumni Scholarships invitation wasn’t based on application, then how do they( alumni) select these students ?
I am curious . If you know?
After admissions decisions are released, the alumni association receives a list of admitted students. The alumni association then reads the alumni scholarship applications that were submitted from students who were admitted. The alumni association has their own rubric and own process for evaluating their applications.
This is the information I have regarding the Alumni Scholarship selection courtesy of the another CC poster.
The process appears to be based primarily on:
a) Standout essays
b) Community service and similar ECs
The Alumni Association is independent of UCLA admissions. There is only a one way flow of information:
UCLA admissions give the Alumni Association a list of some subset of applicants for the invitation email. Then the invitation is sent out and people apply for the Alumni scholarship.
@lkg4answers posted the process after submission of the essay.
Each of the two essay gets a score. I can’t remember if it was 20 or 50 for each.
The EC get another score, I think it’s 20. But essays are definitely the bulk of the points.
The three scores are totaled.
Because people write their essays and EC without knowing if they will get in, many of these apps read very poorly.
Thank you for clarification.
Most students got alumni invitation past years , also my daughter 2 years ago. Is this ( recruitment scholarship) first time? Because there were not any comments about this scholarship past posts . Thank you again.
