UCLA Nursing or Medical Doctor

So I had this conversation with my aunt and she recommended be to major in nursing after I graduate high school. However, I’ve always wanted to be a doctor because I like helping people, medicine, and the salary (because my family is really poor)

She told me that the economy is affecting doctors. (She’s a nurse by the way) She said that doctors don’t get paid by the hour, they get paid by the insurance of their patients, but since a lot of people are getting laid off, there’s no insurance; hence no money. IS THAT TRUE ? She told me to work my way up to a nurse practitioner because they get paid by the hour and would eventually make the same salary as a medical doctor.

I am not sure what to do now…please help me, and suggest what route I should take. Thanks.

Nurses have more patient contact so you will probably have more satisfaction with helping people as a nurse than a doctor. If you’re just worried about financial stability either field will be just fine - we’ve discussed the economy numerous times on this forum and rest assured it will be different by the time you will have a career. If you want to be filthy rich think of another profession because if money is 99% of the reason you want to become a doctor then it’s really not for you.

id have to agree with sid3000. you should go into a field that you love, not one that will produce the most money. imo, if you do a job you love, the money will come after you, you don’t go after it  i know it sounds corny but hey its working well for me and my familia
