UCLA Orientation Exposed!

well if there is a M in front of itr that means its listed under two different depts. Try checking them under both. I got in that way

So I got into a closed and waitlisted class because I talked to my departmental counselors (I have two since I’ll be double majoring). If the class is closed and your DC allows you to take it, she will give you a special code to register. With my waitlisted class (I was #63…), my DC input me into the system herself and emailed me this morning to remind me to check my enrollment menu. I’m in hurraay.

You’ll know some of the more impacted courses have ‘secret spots’ because sometimes the enrollment# is larger than the capacity. Also, some courses only open on second pass, which would explain why they have 0 #en in the registrar (not always the case, of course).

Also, if you don’t get into a course for your major, you have to fulfill 60 upperdiv units anyway so just take an elective. Go crazy

Oh aaand. It’s easier than you think to switch majors. I remember some people were concerned about that.

also why does it matter if ucla isnt full to the brim with good looking people? who cares?

I figured since all of you are talking about classes maybe someone could help me out. As a film major and under the list of major requirements, it lists under Junior Year these three courses among a handful of others…

Undergraduate Symposium - Fall Quarter
Stylistic Studies for the Moving Image - Fall Quarter
Television & Video Production - Fall Quarter

Does that mean I HAVE to take all three of these classes my first quarter?
I’m guessing that’s the case but holy **** it’s really hard to believe. That’s 13-14 units already! They are controlling my life~ DD:

Edit: Also, how many units is everyone else taking? I’ve heard conflicting stories concerning the first quarter, things such as 12-13 units or 3-4 classes, both of which could be totally different.

well to be safe take 12 dude. I’m assuming you have no expericne with the quarter system. I chose 12 to be safe. I dont know yet how hard UCLA is and what pace it moves at better to get a feel for it and go a bit slow than be cocky and get your ass handed to you.

Well I’m definitely not cocky, I’d just prefer to…at the most I guess…take 4 courses. The whole symposium is literally a sit down and listen thing (sort of like Inside the Actor’s Studio), I hardly think there are any assignments.
I was just thinking about getting my English course out of the way and from most of the professor reviews I’ve read on Bruin Walk, it sounds like English is a pretty, decently easy class.

@edelynly: i want to double major too. how do you go about that? did you just go to both department counselors at orientation or what? who would i talk to?
and what are your majors?

thanks

Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me HigherHopes, what about applying for a minor? Can you also do that at orientation?

^ They wouldn’t let me for a public health minor since mine requires an essay and departmental application.

They did let me enroll in the introductory course which is open for non-minors though.

I’m #7 on the waitlist though :/

I was thinking about Anthro, which I hear is an easier major to get into, so I figure getting it as a minor might be ok…?

yessss, the food IS amazing at UCLA. Really.

erikuh, they wouldn’t let you? i want i minor in public health too (call me crazy),
so you enrolled in what, PH 150?
you can still apply for it though, right?

thanks for all that info!

@edelynly - any more information about rieber terrace? living there next year.

@higherhopes - I looked up the undergraduate counselor’s email from the department site of the major I’m interested in (global studies). I just told her I’d really like to double major and asked if I even had a chance because it’s a pretty competitive major considering. She let me know that it was very possible since I had finished all the pre-reqs offered outside of UCLA and that I should meet with her during orientation.

Well, I didn’t meet with her during orientation because it turns out all the departmental counselor meetings are at the same time. :\ I was advised to go to my primary major’s meeting so I went to that, but I emailed the GS counselor after and apologized for not making it. She told me it’s okay and that, if I had time, I should make an appointment to meet with her so she could go over everything I missed. She’s also the one who put me into the class I was #63 wait listed on.

Pretty much let your dept. counselors know that you would like to double major. Some majors require an application at the end of fall (incl. global studies) so you would have to petition to actually declare both majors (for your degree) after and if you’re admitted to that major. If the major doesn’t require an application, talk to your DC and have him/her help you with the process ([Double Major](http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/counseling/regulations/dmajor.htm)). But I think right now you should concentrate on contacting the dept. counselor. Hope this helped :)

@maybrooke - I think the pictures on the virtual website pretty much do justice. You’ll get to see during orientation. The closets are quite big and the halls/elevators/lounge/whatever are very nicely kept.

@shawneee Yeah, Mil Sci is Army ROTC. I’m no longer taking Latin, so I should be okay (I did have to add another Mil Sci course though - but it’s only 2 units).
@HigherHopes You can enroll in a closed class with a PTE number.

HigherHopes - yeah there’s a whole separate process of applying that we have to go through.

I would try to get into PH150 first since it’s only offered in the fall it seems (there’s 11 waitlisted now), then we can apply this fall and declare it.

erikuh- you are 7th on the waitlist for publich health?? I want to take that class too…

I did the early arrival thing and it was totally awesome; made some new friends and got to check out the rieber terrace dorms firsthand. The actual orientation wasn’t as fun though imo. It was kinda pointless until the meetings with the oc’s. I couldn’t attend any workshops b/c I had to make an entirely new schedule due to some pre-req hurdles that I didn’t know of until I got my dpr at noon so that took all of my time (I didn’t even have time to sit down and eat any of the awesome looking food in the covel commons restaurant, but downed two shots of espresso instead). But the campus is amazing, the chicks were fairly hot, and everything was fairly enjoyable until the actual enrollment section…my group went up to the dorms (which is where you enroll) and we all had our classes planned (or re-planned in most cases) and drew numbers to see the order to apply so it was fair. I got 5 out of 7 and thought I was screwed but it turned out that none of us could enroll in any major classes due to various unforeseen “errors”. So we just sat and waited for a phone call from the dept. and at 9:30pm I finally got in to all of the classes I wanted. The only scary thing was that my oc straight up said that my major was insanely difficult and that many people change it once they start taking the classes…in fact there were only two people in my major at the entire orientation session total, including myself. But overall, it was a cool experience and I would suggest the early arrival feature.

inexile: what is your major?

shawneee - Yeah PH150. I was 8th when I signed up on wednesday. Just checked now and I’m #6 yay!
