UCLA over UCB for additional 5k?

I was already set on Berkeley but I just found out UCLA is awarding me an additional 5k in grants and scholarship. I live close to Berkeley so I’ll be closer to family and friends but this made me think. Would you choose another school just to save 5k?

I don’t think that’s quite significant enough to change my mind about what school I want to go to. On the other hand, if you don’t really care which school you go to and provided that your major is comparable at both schools, I’d go for UCLA.

I would choose another school to save 5k if I wasn’t dead set on either university. 5k is a nice amount in extra aid to receive, so I would definitely find it compelling. are you set on Cal despite this?

I was dead set on Cal before this. I mean, 5k is still money but it made me think a bit about Cal. But yeah I guess 5k isn’t significant enough for me to move all the way down there like what the other post said.

If Cal is your first choice, 5k isn’t enough to justify the switch. If you know you’d be equally happy either way, choose UCLA with 5k to spare.

I would go for UCB giving that it should have a higher return of investment on the long run

Not if you’re going to commute to Cal.

by “long run” I meant OP’s lifetime

I don’t know if your reply was intended towards my post…

But OP asked: ‘UCLA over UCB for additional 5k?’

My reply was, ‘Not if you’re going to commute to Cal.’ In which case he (guessing wrt gender) actually could be saving ~$10K/year by attending Cal and commuting instead of having to pay an extra $15K in R&B at UCLA.

if finances are a concern yes, if not then go with the school you like best!

cal 10char

$5000 may seem like a big deal now, but after you graduate and get a good job it will be absolutely nothing. Don’t let future pocket change tear you away from where you really want to go.

won’t you spend more than 5k getting a place to live at UCLA anyway? unless you plan on living near cal and getting an apartment (or already have one) then i’d say go to Cal. The schools offer pretty much the same quality education, so it’d be kind of dumb to choose one over the other if one of them is offering you more money. If you’ll be 10k more in debt at berkeley than at UCLA, i’d say choose UCLA (unless you absolutely hate socal) since they’ll basically afford you the same opportunities, and one gives you more money than the other.

but, like i said, if you’d save 5k or more by going to Cal anyway (since you already live there) then stay there. Cal’s a good school, but there’s no way it’s better to UCLA to the degree that it’s worth 5k more per year.

5k seemed substantial when I first saw it. But I guess there really isn’t much different when all other expenses are factored in. Thanks for all the comments.
