UCLA Profs

How are the profs at UCLA? (esp. those in school of engineering) I know there are a few Nobel laureate profs in Chem. The www.uclaprofs.com website makes it seem like the profs are all kinda…out there. Do they teach well/make themselves accessible? (I’ve checked www.ratemyprofessors.com before but it wasn’t that informative/comprehensive)

I never took chem or engineering at UCLA, but most of my profs were fairly accessible and easygoing.

My girlfriend works in someone’s lab (Crosbie?) and that lady seemed nice enough.

Almost everyone who cares about ratings will use uclaprofs, and not that other alternative (plus can’t any random person use ratemyprofessor?). Keep in mind that the majority of the time, only disgruntled students will have the motivation to submit a comment or rate the professor, so most of the time, you’re only getting feedback from the students who do not perform above average in the class (like the chem lower division classes, where it is especially prevalent and extreme for the labs since they’re one of the bottleneck classes that every science major has to go through).

Every professor has office hours so accessibility shouldn’t be a problem. In my experience, only a small handful of students (single digit number) actually use that resource.

jyancy,

Actually, I believe that professor ratings are bimodal, and tend to be either very high or very low.

First off, no one actually uses UCLAProfs.com for their professor reviews. UCLAProfs.com was started by a right wing UCLA alumni who is trying to take down some of the “liberal” professors at UCLA that he happens not to agree with. It in no way represents the general student body views of these professors, and there is no way to get the other side of the story on there. Most engineering profs don’t exactly spout off Marxist rantings midlecture anyway so they won’t be mentioned on there. Also, as a CS major and part time web programmer, I have to say that his website design is terrible.

Real UCLA students use Bruinwalk.com to get real useful opinions about professors.

I’ve taken plenty of engineering and math courses, and I’d have to say that the quality of teaching is pretty wide ranging. I’ve definitely had my share of terrible professors, and also had some that I’ve found to be great. I’ve found that the engineering professors tend to be a bit less accessible and friendly than profs in the math department (which is my minor) since they are even more concerned with research, but I wouldn’t say they’re unaccessible. They all have regular office hours and some will go out of their way to answer your questions. Most are pretty good about responding to emails too. So if you make the effort to go out and reach your profs, they’ll be able to help.

As far as their lecturing, some are good and some are bad. To find an engaging speaker on south campus is rare, though I’ve had a few. Most at least speak passable English though I’ve had some that barely do. Sometimes the accents make for the most interesting moments in lecture. I’d have to say the majority of professors at least do a good job of disseminating their information, though most don’t exactly stimulate you to learn it. UCLA is definitely a place for the self motivated. If you want to learn the subject, you’ll make it happen. If you have any specific questions about specific courses and their professors, be feel free to ask me or use Bruinwalk.com

 I thought he meant uclaprofessors.com (a mirror to bruinwalk.com). uclaprofs.com is just some crazy lunatic’s site.
