UCLA psychology degree with an education phd

Hi was wondering by any chance what the salary of a ucla grad with psychology master and an educational leadership doctorate in California?

This is far too specific a question.

If you get an educational leadership doctorate, where you went to undergrad will be irrelevant to your salary. You can go to UCLA or you can go to Podunk State - it’s the doctoral degree that will primarily determine your salary.

From there, the salary is really dependent on what you do with the degree. K-12 principals average $87,760 a year; administrators at higher levels average $91,780. School superintendents usually make in the low 6 figures. Those who work on the regional or state level on education can potentially make the same or more, depending on the role and the scope. With an educational leadership degree you could also go into educational consulting, potentially educational research or related work at test-prep companies and the like, or corporate-type work at educational companies like Teach for America or private school systems like Success Academy. Those salaries are likely variable. If you wanted to be a professor of educational leadership, professors average $68,970 but that average is widely variable depending on level (newbie assistant professor vs. 20-year full professor) and school (UCLA will pay more than Podunk State).

Do note, though, that educational leadership PhD programs usually require some work experience. The most common route is people who have taught for several years in the K-12 system, maybe even worked at the assistant principal or principal level for a bit with a master’s. Other education-related positions lead to the degree, too, like policy research, educational support roles, and people who work in education research or support in think tanks and nonprofits.

And as a last note, you probably don’t want to get a master’s in psychology. It won’t really help you much. A notable exception, though, is if you want to get a master’s in school psychology and work as a school psychologist. Otherwise, an M.Ed (or an MA in an education-related field) would be a better fit for your career goals.
