UCLA Regents Scholarship Notification

I sent in my application about an hour before the deadline and got the e-mail. I agree that you should contact the Financial Aid Office and at least inquire as to why you may not have gotten an invitation to compete. I don’t think there’s any point to try and figure out the method they use to determine who they sent the invite out to because I think it’s probably not as simple as we believe it is. Good luck!

I got an email from UCLA, anyone know when Davis sounds out emails?

I have a 4.0, 1W and some EC’s but nothing amazing.

^ Are you talking about Davis’s Regents Scholarship? Davis doesn’t invite.

Does anyone know the address to send the transcripts to?? It doesn’t have one on the email.

Hey guys, I received this today from the UCLA Scholarship Coordinator:

I guess a 4.0 was not good enough for my major? No idea, kind of bumbed out that I didn’t at least get a chance to compete for the Regents. After all, two years of straight A’s was a TON of work! Oh well, UCLA is still my top choice for undergrad so hopefully I will get in…

I’m sorry to hear that TonyPreMed. I would feel similarly if I were in the same situation, but you have to remember that scholastic achievements like yours-whether always recognized or not, are still something to be extremely proud of. The hard part is that we are not always the judge of such things and I’m sure they took other things into account heavily (such as EC’s and personal statement-which as much as people on here try to judge, no one on here really has any authority to say which essays are “strong” essays and etc.) I have no doubt that you’ll be a Bruin one day and I hope to see you there. :)

Thank you for the encouragement! I, too, hope to see you all at UCLA in the fall.

Forever alone.

Do you guys really think they started reading personal statements yet? Or perhaps they grouped all the 4.0’s and just read those essays. Hmmm. Im REALLY curious to know how they differentiated 4.0’s.

@billionaire: do you think there is a difference in 4.0 earned in one year, two year, three year or more?

@TonyPreMed2013: Sorry for your disaapointment

@Billionaire: It would seem so.

I think it also has something to do with your major. That is, only so many 4.0 students applying to the same major were made eligble. Likewise, if your major did not have any 4.0 students or VERY few than this could explain why some sub 4.0 (~3.9+) students were invited to compete for the award.

@howard: I dont really know what you are getting at with your question. I simply dont understand it. If you simply are asking if there is a difference between when you earn the 4.0, then no, there isnt a difference. If you are asking about how long it took you to get it (like spending 4 years at CC) then yeah, that makes a difference in my opinion though I dont know how much. The main TAP person at Berkeley once said that a woman was admitted into UCB who spent like 8 years at CC (no lie). So obviously the fact that it took her forever to transfer wasnt a deal breaker. I doubt it would be the same for a scholarship this prestigious though.

@tony: Perhaps. We could speculate all day about this (why not). My major is impacted to the fullest (Biz Econ) and I know that only 3.85+ get in. So how many Biz Econ admits were also nominees? Who knows. Thats a plausible theory about taking majors into account.

I find speculating on UCLA’s methodology as it pertains to the Regents Scholarship kinda fun. I feel like Scully and Mulder.

@Billionaire: Sorry for being too rush. Your second translation is what I meant. Staying for how long doesn’t really affect admission. But I am not sure about other considerations, especially ones that consider academic workloads.

Yeah well I finished in two years, most pre-meds take three. I took every single summer and winter semester. That didn’t seem to help me much lol

@tonypremed did you have all of your pre-reqs done or in progress?

Wow, tonypremed, I think they made a big mistake not considering you for regents! Your stats are awesome…

@ILoveLA24: Yes, I have completed/will complete all pre-reqs by spring except for one physics class. The interesting thing is that my friend who received the invite with a 3.9+ has completed exactly the same pre-reqs as me, will be missing the same physics course, we attend the same CCC, we have completed the pre-reqs in the same amount of time and we have very similar EC’s. The only two things different about our applications is that I have a 4.0 while he received one “B” and I applied as a Psychobiology major while he applied as a Phsyiological Science major.

I truly beleive that your major plays a role in all of this. Just think about comm and biz/econ transfers at UCLA; they “all” have a 3.9+ and many have 4.0’s. It does not seem logical that they would invite all of these students to compete. Likewise, some science majors have far lower average GPA’s for admits, usually around 3.6 or so. Again, it would not make sense to not invite any of these students just because the comm and biz/econ majors have higher GPA’s.

Yeah!! I have a 3.9 as a Bio major and I want a reagents!!!

though I took Calculus over winter and got a B, but they don’t have to know that just yet ;]
