^See my earlier post. All Regents invitations have already been sent out. If you did not receive one already, than you should not expect one because it will not be coming

@TonyPreMed2013,

It’s gotta be the personal statement or the EC’s or a combo of both.

^ Idk about that. I basically tutor just 2 subjects and thats about It. I wrote really good statements tho

@tonypremed It makes no sense that you weren’t invited to compete. Who knows what type of review they use to come up with the “top 1%” of applicants. And if it really is the top 1%, why wouldn’t admission be guaranteed upon receiving an invite?

@ILoveLA24: Well because you can’t guarantee admission based on a scholarship invitation. You can however use it a positive indicator that your chances of admission are good.

It is not a guarantee of admission because no official transcript has been received, students can drop classes, making them less eligible and maybe even INeligible… and etc. Maybe academically it may seem like you’re a shoe in as far as they are concerned up until this point, but a lot can happen in a semester.

Clearly I don’t mean guarantee admissions with no stipulations, just as when one is admitted there are still requirements such as maintaining at least a 3.0 average, not dropping any classes, etc. But if this really is the top 1% of applicants, then why wouldn’t they be admitted? Because it has happened where those who receive a Regents invite ultimately get rejected. It just makes me wonder if this really is the top 1%.

^ I’m wondering about that too.

They claim that “approximately 600 transfer students are invited”, and for fall 2011, almost 20,000 students applied as transfers. 600/20k is 3%.

@TonyPreMed Selection based on major seems plausible, but that wouldn’t explain outliers like me. I applied for the highly impacted psych major. Unless they also consider alternate majors (mine is anthropology B.A.), a 3.98 wouldn’t be at the highest percentile.

This is like a puzzle with missing pieces. Perhaps we should stop speculating and accept it as is.

Why doesn’t one of us just email/call and inquire?

If you guys aren’t believing what their own official website says, why would you believe what a rep would say? Either way it’s invite only so there’s really no need to worry.

^^ I was assuming that they wouldn’t tell us. At any rate, there’s no way I would call and say, “Your website says that I’m not supposed to be eligible!”

^ What do you mean that we’re not believing their official website?

Edit: @ILoveLA24 The address is on the side of the online application.

UCLA Financial Aid Office
A-129 Murphy Hall
Box 951435
Los Angeles, CA 90095-1435
Attn: Regents Scholarship Section

I called again and again for three days before I noticed this. No one at the scholarship office ever picked up…

@ILoveLA24 - By the top 1% they mean top 1% academically. It takes much more than an academic GPA to be admitted to UCLA. Many people who have a 4.0 transfer GPA may be all they have. Maybe they wrote a personal statement that the admission officers did not like.

@BostonCrmPie - Oh, I was just referring to Billionaire’s comment of “why doesn’t one of us just call and inquire?”

What’s everyone’s major?

Business Economics

I am Computer Science major and I received the invitation. My GPA is 4.0, but I do not have 2 Physics and 1 Math for transfer and I do not have many ECs either. I don’t know how they choose candidates. Maybe they just randomly picked in the pool of 3.9s-4.0s.

English major. My friend got invited as well and she is in Business.

My major for UCLA is European Studies.

Baolocdo example suggests that they only took our GPA into consideration, which doesn’t surprise me since they mentioned in the letter and email that we were selected based on our academic accomplishment.

I have one question left though, do you know if the faculty members/adcoms that will read our 300 words essay are also going to read our UC App essays?

I just don’t want to repeat the same stuff again…

^ I had emailed Alejandra Ramirez that question and she said they have access to our entire applications (personal statements included).

Communication Studies Major

@ILoveLA24 Thank you for your answer!
