UCLA Summer Courses: Expensive, but is it worth the costs?

I’m a transfer student heavily considering taking 3-5 upper division summer courses somewhere in the area of the social sciences over two sessions at UCLA, but my only concern is the cost. Would anyone recommend taking summer courses to fulfill major requirements? One reason I’m asking is because I know as a transfer student, I will have a really low registration date, so I thought taking courses over the summer would help with registration and with getting requirements out of the way. Anyone agree or disagree?

I’m also taking housing at UCLA for the summer if that is any help.

what’s your major?

i ask because some classes are harder to get than others when you have a late reg date. i was a fresh transfer last fall, and i’m a poli sci major. i couldn’t get ANY poli sci class, and i ended up having to wait until winter to get my lower div pre reqs finished. i would have taken summer courses if i had known that was going to happen.

i’m going to take summer courses this year to make up for lost progress. to be fair though, i’m trying to complete a minor and a couple of honors programs as well. if you’re just gonna go for one major, you should be fine without summer.

Summer school is the best. totally worth the time and the cost.

When I was at UCLA I found that taking summer courses was a great way to stay on top of my degree progress. Much as with you (Beyopi), I was also majoring in the Social Sciences (Sociology) and so my Summer School courses were the electives that I wanted to take. Considering you’re a transfer student, I would recommend not taking the required core courses (Soc 101/102) during the summer because for one, it’s a shorter period to take the courses, and for two, while you will learn the majority of things covered during a regular session, I’ve always found that core courses are best taken during the regular school year given that these courses will be the ones that will contain a lot of important information that will keep on coming up down the road in other upper division req’s for your social science major, so rather than learn that information at a fast pace, it’s best to learn it at the regular 10-week quarter pace.

Having said that, if you can afford the cost of Summer Session, I strongly recommend you go ahead and take some courses. From my experience, a fair amount of professors teaching summer school at UCLA aren’t regular professors at UCLA during the academic year, so always check and research who the professors will be ahead of time (Unless the schedule of classes doesnt list that info, which sometimes happens during Summer Sessions).

Also dont be surprised if many of the students in your summer session don’t attend UCLA. I often found that several students in my courses attended various other out of state universities and were doing their summer session at UCLA to be close to home yet still be able to take classes at UCLA that are transferrable at their regular colleges for credit.

Just my .02

^ I want to take a public health class and a drama writing class

they total up to 2,000K with room and board included

Is it worth it?

If you have the money for it, it’s definitely worth it.
