Edited: So according to the data from StatFinder, roughly 43% of applicants were admitted to UCLA from SMC while roughly 34% won admission from OCC. (This is from 2008-09.)

keep in mind that a longer commute will definitely affect your grades. if i were you i would just go to the local CC. imo the commute that you have to make to a CC that is far away cancels out any benefit (real or imagined) of going to a more “popular” CC.

focus on location more. it’s seriously not worth it to drive further/wait through traffic for junior college. it will reflect in your grades. i’ve been there, done it. trust me.

fwiw, I think SMC has a nicer theatre and better theater arts program than OCC. The student population is also more diverse and location is more ideal. OCC has gone up the ranks in transfers due to UCI but imo think that part of the OC is just a homogenous stale suburb.

it’s a community college, not a life choice. community college is primarily a tool to transfer, and shouldn’t be looked at too much more in depth than that.

Another misguided opinion from a noob to the educational system. CCC’s are a two tier system. They are first and foremost a TWO year institution that grants an Associates degree/certificate and then a transfer institution because are under the k-12 umbrella. This is often confused by California HS students with the know it all attitude of why is half the CCC student body older(most attend night classes) what are they stupid or something!??!?

There has only been recent focus on transfer students over degree students in the past 5-8 years due to the failure of no child left behind. Due to lack of funding and lack of proper student-teacher ratios in the k-12 system many students in the past decade haven’t been prepared enough for higher education so have been directed to a CCC first. Letting CHS into a CCC as a soph or junior as a practice is quite new in fact because of all these issues.

I personally think they have made the streamlining method way too easy for California transfers and there should be more tough love. It’s been happening more and more but still not enough, mostly due to the immaturity of fresh out of HS frosh.

To OP: are you only concerned with transferring and could care less about your education? If so take the previous posters advice. If you do care about learning and growing and becoming the best you could be so can stand out then treat it like you would any institution. The cool thing about SMC like I said is their theater arts department is good quality and they have a wonderful building with excellent faculty. The other reason I would choose SMC is that there are many OOS and international students who tend to take their education more seriously and are more motivated in general. That is because they came to California with serious intentions to break into the biz and also pay the bucks expecting to receive a quality education. In contrast, many locals tend to have a poorer attitude towards education in general when it comes to CCC’s because take public education for granted and are protected under state ‘entitlement’ clauses.

Oh lord, I am not going to get all tied up with you in this. You have no idea of my experiences, background, or motivation. It’s very naive to make inferences about a person in that manner. No community college is miles better than another - you can still find good teachers. Don’t try and cheapen what I went through to transfer and get over yourself.

Cripes, now I need some coffee…then film classes throughout the day whoop whoop…where at least 2D is better than 1D sock puppet theatre here on CC.

affirmative. was going to just say yup but wasn’t long enough. I still think SMC’s theater everything is better than OCC’s I agree that driving from the OC to LA is crazy so would just move in that case. I almost attended ECC but Torrance area is booooorrrrrrrrriiiiiiingggggggg
