UCLA Transfer (Unique Situation)

I will try and make the story short. I will graduate this June. Class of 09  During my senior year I took a lot of classes at our community college in hopes to complete as many GE classes I can before I graduate. I am a special admit student at Oxnard College but after I graduate from high school I will attend Moorpark College. I predict that I can transfer in 1 year after I graduate. I have 2.1 GPA in high school… but I vowed to change my ways! >=P

I want to get into UCLA and get a bachelors degree in Physiology. I AM REALLY REALLY REALLY MOTIVATED TO GET INTO UCLA. I went on a field trip there and I LOVED IT!!! The college is so alive and open. Here are the required prequisites:

At minimum, you should complete:
one year of biology with laboratory,
one year of general chemistry with laboratory,
one year of calculus
one semester of organic chemistry with laboratory.
(Completion of a second semester of organic chemistry or one year of calculus-based physics is strongly recommended)

All the classes I took at Oxnard College as a special admit student qualifies for IGETC. Here are the classes I took Oxnard College:

08’ Summer: Physiology With lab. Grade: B for lecture/ A for lab
08’ Sociology 102. Grade: A
08’ Fall: Health 101. Grade: A
08’ Fall: Psychology 101 Grade: B
08’ Fall: Philosophy 101. Grade: A
09’ Spring: English 101. Grade: (Prediction) B
09’ Spring: Philosophy (critical thinking) 111. Grade: (Prediction) A
09’ Spring: Sociology 104: (Prediction) A

Here are the classes I plan to take at Moorpark College. I intend to get all A’s at Moorpark because I don’t have high school to worry about =P All the classes I will take are going to finish up IGETC and count toward my preparation for transfer. So after fall of 09’ I will have IGETC completed.

09’ Summer: Music Appreciation
09’ Summer: Fundamentals of music
09’ Summer: College Algebra and Trigonometry
09’ Fall: General Chemistry I
09’ Fall: General Biology I
09’ Fall: Calculus I
09’ Fall: Intro to Genetics
10’ Spring: General Chemistry II
10’ Spring: General Biology II
10’ Spring: Calculus II
10’ Spring: Organic Chem? (not sure if I should take Organic chem concurrently with General Chem II)

The only prequisites I isn’t complete is Physics. It says on Assist.org we can finish it at UCLA after transferring.

By the end of spring of 10’ I would have around 60-70 transferable credits.
I don’t know if I put this on the right place. But who would better know the answers than UCLAers. =P

Now the question is: Can I APPLY to UCLA with under 60 transferable credits? I’ll only have about 30 credits transferable credits when I APPLY. It says you need over 60 transferable credits before ACTUALLY TRANSFERRING to UCLA. I wanted to make the distinction between applying and transferring clear.

I saw the UC app and it had the opinion to list all the classes you need left to take to be listed under the “planned” section. Is it ok to have more then 80 to 85% percent of prequisites category “planned” when I apply? will they Reject me when their decisions come out next March or April? D:

OMG WALL OF TEXT D: please help >.< Im so nervous that my plans will backfire. That means I worked my butt off as a special admit student for nothing during high school! So scared.

Any feed back will be appreciated and loved.

there’s a separate forum for UC transfers where you can get more replies. My advice would be to aim for those A’s and make sure the classes are offered each semester or quarter or you will need to take courses after transferring. you provided a lot of info by the way, maybe you should post again in the UC transfers thread to get more advice

also you need to check assist.org to make sure you are fulfilling the right requirements

Dude that’s a joke.

chem 101, calc 1, bio 1 and genetics in the same semester… that’s like 20 units of pure science. You are bound to get terrible grades or not learn anything. Pulling off A’s in ALL of those classes is nearly impossible unless you are cheating your way through and not learning the material.

Face it, you need two years to transfer. Don’t ruin your GPA, because that’s the only thing that will get you into UCLA as a transfer student. Spending one extra year isn’t a bad idea. I know you can learn the subjects and score high, but taking all of those courses in a semester is asking for bad grades and overwhelming stress.

I like how your so eager to get the hell out of your community college, and you have every right to be. When I was at your situation (2 years ago), I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to do. That’s to get into UCLA as a transfer student. I didn’t realize UCLA was so great (at least better than junior colleges) until I actually laid foot there.

You have yet to take a 5 unit class, and trust me it’s not as easy as those 3 unit courses you’ve been taking. I could easily take 21 units of just bull crap classes like English, philosophy, and etc and still get A’s, but there’s almost no way to take 20 units of only 5 unit classes and expect to do just as well. Consider it this way, to get an A in a 5 unit science class, expect to put in 3X the work and 3X the effort of a 3 unit class. Because your going to moorpark, it’s going to be a lot easier to get A’s in those 5 unit science classes, because moorpark teachers are a joke. People drive 2 hours from the LA area to go to that school because they know how easy the bio, calc, and physics is. The ochem over there is also a joke if you take the right professor.

Take no more than 2 5 unit courses per semester and take 2 bs 3 unit courses along with it. That’s like 16 units but it’s MUCH doable. Don’t do all of your IGETC classes in one semester. You absolutely NEED 60 units of TRANSFERRABLE UC courses COMPLETED by Spring semester prior to your transfer. That means you can take classes that spring to count for the 60 units.

Good luck though, PM me if you have any questions…

For your information I have a 4.0 GPA in all course work for all of the classes your going to be taking these two years. I am IGETC certified, UCLA TAP Honors certified, and have 1 year of bio, 1 year of calc, 1 year of general chem, and 1 year of ochem done by the time I transfer (this fall) and I started two years ago. I can tell you that it’s not a walk in the park. Sure the material is straightforward, but their isn’t enough hours in the day to study and do all the little things that you do everyday, like shower, sleep, and eat.
