UCLA & UCI Gift Aid

Anyone know why it is so weird! The huge different between UCLA and UCI Gift Aid?!

I got in UCLA and UCI for fall 2009

Student Contribution = $0
Parent Contribution = $0
Expected Family Contribution = $0

ePal at UCLA:

Registration Fees & Health Insurance: $8,970
Books and Supplies: $1,599
Living Expenses: $13,788
Total UCLA Cost :$24,357

Gift Aid
Federal Pell Grant: $5,350
Total Gift Aid: $5,350

Net UCLA Costs
UCLA Costs: $24,357
Gift Aid: $5,350

Total Net Cost: $19,007 (From Loan)

At UCI:

Direct Costs (Fees and Health Insurance): $9,480.50
Books and Supplies: $1,645.00
Living Expenses (Housing/Meals, Transportation, Personal): $13,805.00
Total UCI Cost: $24,930.50

Gift Aid
Federal Pell Grant (01): $5,350.00
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant: $500.00
Smart Grant-National Science & Mathematics YR3: $4,000.00
UC Irvine Grant: $10,180.00
Total Gift Aid: $20,030.00

My Net Cost: $4,900.50

At UCLA, will ePal be the subject to change…UCI grant alone give me $10,180.00. At UCLA, according to my ePal, Ferderal Pell Grant is the only grant I will get! I sent email and ask UCLA Financial Aid office a week ago! No response yet!

Is that possible UCI gift aid is more than 20,000 but at UCLA, it is only 5,350? Anyone got the same situation?

At UCLA, ePal is just the preliminary review, anyone know if EFC is 0, what is the max Gift Aid you will be able to get at UCLA, possibility? Does UCLA offer UC grant as same as $10,180.00 of UCI?

If my Gift Aid is the same as the reviewing of ePal at UCLA, UCI will be my destinition!!!

Contact them - if your EFC is $0 and your parents’ (or your, if independent) income is below $60k, you should qualify for Blue and Gold Opportunity, which is full tuition + fees. It looks like UCI gave you Blue and Gold, and UCLA didn’t, but it’s not a merit-based thing, it’s automatic. So, yeah, contact UCLA finaid and see what the holdup is.

More on Blue and Gold: [UC Blue and Gold Opportunity](Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan | UC Admissions)

That site says you have to apply for a Cal Grant - if UCLA didn’t get your Cal Grant application they might not have determined you eligible.

Good luck!

Thanks UCLAboi,

I contacted the FA office already via email, no response yet!

ePal: A preliminary review of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) indicates that you may be eligible for financial aid for the 2009-2010 academic year. Your financial aid award will be finalized after a review of your file.

I dont know how long it will take them to finalized my Gift Aid at UCLA?

What you see on your ePal that usually will be the same on your eFan - Is it right? or it’s used to be changed after they finalized my Gift Aid.

In principle your eFAN should be substantially the same as your ePAL, though they might move money from one kind of grant to another, i.e., from Grant Aid to Cal Grant. So your UCI aid is probably going to stay more or less the same.

If UCLA did make a mistake though they’ll fix it for your eFAN, and if they haven’t fixed it by then, they’ll adjust it after. Obviously you have to decide before then though, so I hope you hear from UCLA soon!

If you don’t qualify for Blue and Gold then UCLA may just have not given you any merit aid, and UCI did. That would suck.

Do you have to complete SIR at UCLA to be able to get the UC Grant and see what grant and scholarship will be available for you at UCLA!? I haven’t completed any document of SIR because like I said if The Federal Pell Grant is the only grant which I will get when I accept the Adm from UCLA, then I would go to UCI…

My GPA: 3.97 and UCLA doesn’t even offer any scholarship in my ePal!(ex as SMART grant) It’s weird!

Anyway, thank you very much for your response!

SMART grants are only given to 3rd and 4th years.

Fansecco-
I would think in this case that a phone call to ucla fin aid to leave a message for your fin aid counselor is best…they could never get that email…its assigned by letters of the alphabet…they will sort it out for you

Thanks for all responses!

Jinobi: “SMART grants are only given to 3rd and 4th years.” – I’m a transfer student from CCC

Thanks “theocmom” I definitely will call! Money matter! ^_-

Will let you guy know about my FA! I hope that I will get the good news from UCLA!

Thanks agian!

Not totally sure, but I think that SMART Grants won’t be in effect until the school year (quarter) starts? I think it’s after the 3rd week or so … to verify that you have enough units.

You will have additional grants coming from UCLA. They know your EFC=0 because of the Pell. Looks like they have not put together their package for you. Make sure you SPEAK to a financial aid counselor and not rely on email.

i got the opposite. got full coverage including cal grant and pell grant from ucla while i only got a few grand and cal grant and federal grants from irvine.
