Personally, advising can be VERY important. We were told that a majority of freshman change majors at least once during their college years. And that’s when advisors can be a big help or not.
D18 found that advising at Michigan LSA was a big help when she added a couple of minors. Her major never changed though.

Beginning College Students Who Change Their Majors Within 3 Years of Enrollment says about a third of students who have ever declared a major changed their major within the first three years, although this was from 2011-2012.
Of course, if you include undeclared students declaring a major as changing major, the percentage of students who change their major will go way up. Also, it goes up even more if counting undecided undeclared students who change their probable majors before declaration and therefore would not be tracked by colleges. But the latter group of undecided undeclared students may be most in need of academic advising.
