UCLA vs UC Berkeley EECS requirements

I have going to attend community college next year. I plan to transfer as a EECS major at Berkeley or CSE major at UCLA. The classes for both major differ quite a bit. I plan to take all of the recommended courses for Berkeley at CC and take EE 20N and Discrete math/probability theory over summer at Cal. Some of the recommended courses for UCLA are different. Do I have to take ALL of the prerequisites/recommended for Cal AND UCLA to be a good applicant? I don’t want to do all the UC Berkeley curriculmn and then get accepted to LA only to find I have a lot of classes missing…

Well, engineering/computer science is extremely competitive at both schools, so I think it’d be prudent to take as many recommended courses for both programs as possible. I’m sure there are many applicants who’ve gotten in without taking recommended courses, but all things considered, it’d be a good idea to maximize your admissions prospects by taking those classes if that option is available to you.

@failure622 knows more about engineering admissions at Berkeley and UCLA. You should ask him about this.

They won’t require you to take courses not available at your local CCs… but if you transfer without the prerequisites completed, you will be spending the first few quarters or semesters taking “catch up” courses, which may delay graduation or leave less schedule space for the interesting upper division courses.

Diablo Valley College, Laney College, or a combination of the two appears to have relatively good coverage of both Berkeley EECS and UCLA CSE lower division courses, according to http://www.assist.org .
