I’m a transfer student with a 3.50 G.P.A I’d like to apply as a Political Science major unfortunately my G.P.A. is too low, it’s apparently impacted. The admission councelor suggested I apply as a European Studies major. My dream is to work in the United Nations. Is it possible to petition for a double major once I’m there?European Studies and Political Science? I also want to attend law school, so does my major European Studies effect my admission since it’s not fancy?

You should also consider majoring in Anthropology or Philosophy. Those majors have less pre-reqs and high admission rates. You could later add Poli Sci as a minor.

Law School mostly cares about GPA and LSAT scores. I hear the major doesn’t matter much.

Thanks!

Are Anthropology or Philosophy better for me than European Studies? I like Western culture alot but the I’m neverous about writing papers in another language.

are you gonna be transferring from a community college??

If you are, I suggest you do TAP and put Political Science as your primary major and then select a less impacted major as your alternate major. That way you will have two chances of getting into UCLA. That’s what I did. I was denied into Psychology but admitted into Philosophy.

nervous

It’s too late for me to do TAP this fall is my last semester.

oh

In that case you are better choosing a less impacted major. You said you want to work in the United Nations right? Do you need to go to Law School for that?? In that case I’d suggest you choose Philosophy because is a good prep for Law School.

Also you have to take into account what classes you have completed for each major. Do you have any completed classes for European studies, Anthro, etc.?

Ohh and remember to complete ALL pre-reqs by Spring '12, try to complete more than half by Fall '11.

I can’t stress this enough. Missing just one pre-req could result in being rejected.

hey SMCguy you an Anthro major right? do you know if it’s possible to change from Philosophy to Anthropology? I dont want to do Philosophy and Anthropology is closer and more similar to psychology.

@KidKrasher Yes, you can switch after completing at least 2 pre-reqs. The Anthro dept will need to approve. I heard you may also be able to switch at Orientation.

Just wondering, what are you guys planning to do with Anthro? I might minor because I will have finished a cultural, human evolution, and archaeology course by the start of the year. I absolutely love the field, but I don’t know what I would do with it!

Believe it or not, I don’t know of any major fields that don’t utilize anthropologists in some capacity. Simply put it is the “study of humans” so it is easily adapted to suit any interests or careers. I have a friend interested in urban anthro who dreams of designing malls and department stores, one in physical anthro who plans to go to med school and serve abroad, and even one interested in film making who wants to become a set design/creative consultant by majoring in cultural anthro and minoring in film/media/tv.

Personally I love culinary anthro so I will major in cultural, attend culinary school and then grad school. I hope to research while traveling the world and examining food as a complete representation of culture (similar to the show Bizarre Foods).

Oh, I do believe it. I also agree! I just wish there was a more direct and obvious path from anthropology to a specific career at times. Kind of like my English major, the idea of a more vague and broad major kind of makes me nervous.

I liked your idea about culinary anthropology. That sounds awesome! I also like cultural anthropology and had it been my major, would have been my emphasis.
