UCONN Class of 2023

Just got the packet for my daughter. $18,500/year, plus honors. Was expecting $15K and no honors so both are quite the surprise. 3.7 weighted/33 ACT (superscore).

Anyone know what the cost of attendance for 2019-2020 is?

@lexluthor5 $53,152 for 2019-2020, assuming your daughter waives health insurance. https://financialaid.uconn.edu/cost/

@nededen Environmental Science. But in all honesty there is a decent chance she might change majors. Also, she wants to minor in Asian Studies (maybe even major), and probably take 4 years of language, which isn’t available at branch.

@jdcollegedad wow, that’s over a 4% increase from 2018-2019, seems quite high comparatively

@lexluthor5 That is a large increase, and it seems that they are enacting another 4-year plan to increase tuition further.

I just noticed the huge COA increase for next year as well. That said, we were thrilled to see the $7,500 scholarship in the snail mail today as we are in state and Uconn is the best $ deal we’ve got while keeping our son relatively close to home. It will however be a bit of challenge convincing him that it’s a good place for engineering. He doesn’t think Uconn’s bad but he thinks other places (WPI, RPI, RIT, etc.) are better. Eager to hear any informed opinions about why that’s not true. Just saw the new incoming President has a strong plasma science/phsyics background which is aligned with what my son wants to study. Can’t find any courses for it in Uconn course catalog however.

We just got son’s snail mail version today with merit info.

@mrs806 you mentioned the food at Uconn – I’ve heard it’s better than a lot of schools. Is that true. Does anyone know the best cafeteria to live near? Also what are the best dorms for engineering students? Is it the “Next Gen?” building and does it have a cafeteria in it?

I got waitlisted

@jdcollegedad @lexluthor5 As a CT resident, this is the way everything has been going. Once a haven for industry/manufacturing, intellectual property, and professional services, now CT is becoming known for exploding cost of living and increasing taxes, which is driving down population (we lose more people than we gain each year - many college graduates decide to leave the state because only the affluent can afford to rent or own here). The state is going to need to correct course as right now, prices are increasing faster than inflation, and population is in decline.

@jdcollegedad i checked out the tuition link, what does New England regional mean. Which students are eligible for that. Thanks

I’m from out of state and was accepted to storrs campus but no merit aid in the acceptance letter … does that mean I got no merit scholarships? Also when are the special program decisions released?

Did merit and honors college info come out yet? If so where?

does anyone have any information about how they notify about admission into special programs? I was accepted into honors with merit but have not received any specific information concerning the special program in law that I applied to. Does this just mean I wasn’t accepted?

@HankCT I grew up in Buffalo and live in NJ, so I can relate to the downward spiral of declining industry and suffocating taxes. 9 years and 3 months until my planned exit to a location with warmer weather and lower taxes. I am encouraging my kids to do the same so they can build wealth. So much competition at the large flagships for students with good stats to fill seats.

@CollegeandPugs8 It should be in the snail mail letter.

@CollegeandPugs8 if merit money and/or an honors invite was offered it is mentioned in the acceptance letter that comes in the mail

@uniquefirsttry Yes, the food is very good. There are many dining halls. For the most part I thought McMahon had some of the best choices. As a freshman my son lived in McMahon and the dining hall is inside the building which was nice. Next Gen is the newer building and of course like anything else very hard to get in. He had applied for the learning community for engineers and was waitlisted 500 applications for 100 spots. So he took what he got and never looked back. He turned down the honors program because he said he needed to see what it was like before he committed to that and I can honestly say it was the best decision. He has many engineer friends because six of them were on his floor as a freshman and they eat together every night. It all comes together somehow. However, four of them are no longer in engineering. It’s a rough road in that major and he takes one day at a time.

@mrs806. What is next gen. Is that the Peter W towers. My son was hoping to get into the Engg learning community but we didn’t realize the demand. Wow.

@HSinLI Pretty much yes Next Gen is the new STEM Initiative to bring more innovation and focus on learning communities within STEM fields and Peter W. Towers is a part of that expansion. Next Gen was still being built when my son was a freshman so the demand was probably bigger for the engineering students. Hopefully now it will be easier to get into one of the communities. It so happened that McMahon housed most of the first year engineer students so it worked out for us that he was able to build friendships with a lot of the STEM students.

@hsinli Here is a link about the NE tuition pact.
