UCR Econ/Business Administrative?

my goal is to pass the CPA and eventually work in the Big 4 firm.

I have a 2.9GPA in Community College, which is crap but I still got accepted to my secondary major at UCR

My main major was supposed to be business admin with option in accounting, but since I didn’t get in, admission sent me to Economic/Administrative major.

My main question is, how big will this have an effect on me, are the differences between the majors that big of a difference? would i be able to change major after my junior year or should I even bother?

I don’t know but I’d imagine as long as you have a high GPA and can sit for the exam, you have a shot at an interview. I think the 2.9 is more of a concern because you’ll need a much higher GPA at UCR to be competitive.

To be eligible to sit for the CPA exam, you have to meet the minimum accounting and business courses; in other words, you don’t need a business or accounting degree, you just need the required courses!!! There’s a little more to that, but you can find the requirements online for the particualr state you’re interested in.

The GPA resets once I transfer.
to sit for the exam I need
A bachelor’s degree;
24 semester units in accounting-related subjects;
24 semester units in business-related subjects (accounting courses beyond the 24 required units may apply toward the business units);
Passing the Uniform CPA Exam;
Two years of general accounting experience supervised by a CPA with an active license; and
Passing an ethics course.

for 2013.

I have 10 semester units in accounting-related subjects already, so I need 14 more, which I’m not sure how to convert since UCR is quarter system.

how is this major though? I kinda iffy about upper division economics

Sorry. I mean I know it resets but aim for near a 4.0. My guess is you’ll be competing with not only other UCR students, but also UCLA, USC, and UCI students for the L.A. offices. I’m not an accounting expert by any means but this is sort of how it works up here in Sac.

http://economics.ucr.edu/undergraduate/ECAT%20worksheet%2011F.pdf

Econometrics is the back-breaker in UD econ classes but it looks like you only have to take one course (statistics for economics). Compared to UCSD for ex. which requires 3 quarters of it.

If I can count, it looks like 14 UD classes?

Econ and Business/Accounting are definitely different. Take an upper division econ course and see how you like it.

I don’t see any reason why UCR would not let you switch major after your 1st or 2nd quarter. You’ll have to talk to your UCR counselor AFTER the 1st quarter.

If I remember correctly, the converson from quarter to semester is 1.5 (ie, 6 quarter units = 9 semester units).

As Emprex stated, you’ll be competing with students/graduates from the local schools so you’ll have to get the highest GPA possible. But once you pass the CPA exam, your GPA shouldn’t factor too much.
