Unlike another college I have attended before, UCR seems very explicit in prohibiting illegal activities. I want to download an online pdf of a textbook (in its latest edition), but I’m not sure if it considered “illegal activity” or not. So could I download online pdf of the latest edition of a required textbook in UCR, especially since the copyright has not expired and since UCR might somehow find out about it? I know I could rent, but I want a personal copy at the lowest possible cost that I could refer back to even after I graduate. (But if it’s really illegal, then I won’t download it.)

If you’re not paying for it, of course it’s illegal. If that’s what you want to do, though, I’d just make sure I downloaded it on a personal computer not on a campus or university-associated internet connection.
