UCs on quarters have finally started!

The UCs (other than Cal which started in mid-August) have finally started. Did any of the other parents find the wait interminable and did your students make themselves extra nervous and jittery during the extra month? My D worried so much more after the bulk of her high school friends left in August - almost to the point where she was saying she no longer wanted to leave. We moved her in over the weekend - finally - and she seems to be adjusting totally normally.

They actually haven’t started yet - not till Thursday (at least at UCLA).

The first year the late start seems sort of extra late since so many other schools have started. They make up for it at the tail end where it seems late again only late in getting out when lots of other schools are already done.

After the first year it seems more normal and the summer tends to get filled up with jobs, summer sessions, study abroad, or internships. It also will seem more normal since they’ll have more friends on the UC quarter schedule.

Boy, you sure have a lot of posts!

And only 1 thread!

Actually, I think I posted about 3 times so that number is bizarre. When I said that they started, all I meant was that the kids have moved in and started Welcome Week. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Approximately 20% of all colleges are on a quarter system (according to UofChicago), so it’s not that unusual.

sfvmomof3:

Most of the students moved in this past weekend or thereabouts so you’re really right.

Even though the UC quarter system starts later and gets out later a fair number of students enjoy the fact that they’ll be between classes, and already done with finals, before the winter break and spring break. They can relax over the break without worrying about HW or finals looming.

I hope your D enjoys her experience there!

DD is also on quarters at Santa Clara. Their classes started today. Truthfully, it has worked out well for her. Since her summer job here was as a lifeguard, and didn’t start until mid-June…that ending time was perfect. Plus she was one of the few lifeguards left who could work through Labor Day. Most had already departed for college. Her December break is almost the same as the ‘semester’ kids and so is her spring break.

Honestly…she has the same school calendar she had in high school so the adjustment was fine.

The Ohio State University is still on quarters – classes begin Wednesday. The new President wants to change over to semesters.

It’s hard when D’s friends all disappear the second week of August. :(

On the other hand, the disliked classes only last 10 weeks.

I think I have all of you beat. We take D to move in to Seattle Pacific for freshman year this Thursday, and her classes don’t start until next Monday!

This summer has been the longest ever. All her friends are gone and their Facebooks are filled with new friends and adventures. D is consoling herself watching Audrey Hepburn movies and pondering how to cut her hair. Oh, and a little packing here and there!

The University of Chicago, on quarters, still hasn’t started. Classes begin next Monday.

We’re tied, corranged!

I vividly recall back in the day that my first quarter at UC Davis classes finally began on Oct 2nd. I was astonished that school was actually starting in October.

DS is on quarters at Caltech - we leave on Friday for our trip to Pasadena to drop him off. School doesn’t start til Monday, Sept 28 for him. We took a trip to Orlando this week and enjoyed Epcot and some of the other attractions when it was not crowded.

No trip to The Price Is Right this year, oaklandmom? :)

No, Florida instead - and I learned my lesson - this year we’re renting a car to drive him down to Pasadena & I’ll fly home.
