Almost 1,000 out of 5,800 enrolled are international. That is crazy, then there’s also out of state. That is ridiculous for a CA public university where we pay taxes. What about the non high achieving average students. They have to go to commuter schools. I’m afraid for my younger daughter because she’s probably not going to have over a 4 gpa.
These schools weren’t this hard to get into when we went to school. You didn’t get denied from most of them.
Didn’t UCSB receive approximately 4,000 more applications than UCB?
@CollegeMomCL2024 this is the UCSB forum but I am happy to answer questions about Davis on the UCD forum. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-davis/
We are from the LA area and have a child who is a third year and loving it at UCD. Either PM me or open a thread to discuss your questions and concerns on the UCD forum.
First Choice Major: Computer Science (College of Engineering)
Second Choice Major: Computer Engineering (College of Engineering)
In response to Gumbymom Forum Champion UC Question
@TonyStark748159: What was your first choice major and alternate?
@CollegeMomCL2024, I full agree with you. the UC system puts many kids and parents in a very tight spot. Just remember, your daughter will do great, irrespective of the school she goes to!
Son accepted pre-Economics
OOS Asian
citizen living overseas
UW GPA 3.7-3.8 (10APs)
SAT 1550 (800M + 750R)
EC good but not outstanding
Essay maybe good
Why does UCSB has pre- major while other colleges don’t
(also accepted UCD & UCSD, waiting UCLA & UCB & USC)
@TonyStark748159: You asked about which major you are waitlisted for and that would be your 1st choice major CS. Since you selected your alternate major in the same College of Engineering, then it really does not make much of a difference since UCSB states they will only consider your alternate major if it is not in the College of Engineering.
@majorgo:
UCSB received 90,974 Freshman applications for Fall 2020 and 63,269 were in-state applicants.
UCB received 88,026 Freshman applications for Fall 2020 and 50,223 were in-state applicants.
@Gumbymom number of applicants info is very useful.
Is there any place can we get list of number of students in each major, etc (for 2019 or little earlier) for different UCs?
I’m sorry for your frustration. My understanding is that by law the state universities are not allowed to enroll more than 15% of students from out of state. If it makes you feel better my daughter was waitlisted as an out of state applicant. She has a 4.0 (UW), 1500 SAT, 15 AP/ honors classes, 2 college classes including one in her intended major as a residential student in the summer. 3 Varsity sports with state recognition in 2, multiple honor societies, extensive service locally and abroad, editor of the yearbook, part time job, and great essays/recommendations. We were shocked that she didn’t get into UCSB. It must have been an extremely qualified class. I hope that your student and family finds the best fit. I’m trusting the same for my graduate.
@orugallu: I have been able to find admits by major for UCI.
https://www.oir.uci.edu/Data-Hub/Undergraduate-Admissions-Dashboard.php
The rest of the UC’s are not the transparent.
More student admission data for UCSB. Note the average GPA for 2019 Freshman was 4.32. http://bap.ucsb.edu/institutional.research/new.student.profiles/freshmen.applicants/
Academic profile for 2019 admits:

Thanks again.
Wow, UCI has very detailed admission details. Very impressed.
Wish other UCs provide such info too.
The UC Board of Regents voted in May 2017 to limit the percentage of nonresident undergraduate students to 18 percent at five UC campuses - UCSB, UCSC, UCD, UCR, UCM. Campuses where nonresident enrollment already exceeded 18 percent, including UCLA, UCB, UCI and UCSD, had to cap enrollment at their 2017-2018 levels which is in the 18-22% range.
The UCI info is very interesting – thank you! I get that yield is likely an influence on the selectivity percentage, but as a California resident it is very disheartening to see that the resident selectivity is so much lower than nonresident and international students (looking at biological sciences specifically).
@24bunheadmom20: I would not focus on the selectivity rate but on the yield rate especially for OOS/International students since costs play a huge factor in the admission rate vs. enrolled rate for these students.
Accepted for Statistics and Data Science
4.08 UC GPA
35 ACT
In-State
I looked at the requirements for switching to computer science and they are definitely doable as I have priority to CS classes as a Statistics major.
@Gumbymom How does the waitlist work as I am waitlisted at UCD too. And my choices are
Computer Science, B.S. (College of Letters and Science)
Computer Science and Engineering, B.S. (College of Engineering)
@TonyStark748159: I am assuming your 1st choice is CS in L&S??
From the UCD website:
** Applicants are encouraged to list an alternate major, but not in the same area as the primary major (e.g., Computer Science Engineering with alternate Computer Science in the College of L&S). Occasionally, we admit to the alternate major.**
It will be harder to get off the waitlist based on your major choices.
@Gumbymom Yes, my 1st choice is CS in L&S.
Now, what am I waitlisted for - 1st choice or 2nd choice??
@TonyStark748159: You would be waitlisted for your 1st choice. All schools have the option of admitting you from the waitlist with your alternate major but since both are highly competitive, it will be interesting to see which if admitted.
