UCSB Class of 2024 Discussion

@Gumbymom I know this is a stupid question. but I am waitlisted for CS at UCD, UCSB, and CP-SLO.
What are the chances I can make into any one of them?

USCD gave me my 2nd choice (Data Science). What are the chances of switching majors at UCSD after joining?

@TonyStark748159
For UCSD switching into cs is a lottery. After you take the prerequisites and have atleast a 3.3 GPA, you get thrown in a lottery for 80 spots. I would assume that there are quite a few people who want to switch to cs so I would say its a 50-50 chance.

@TonyStark748159: Your chances from the waitlists depends upon how many admitted students enroll by May 1 and no one can predict that. Do you have any CS direct admits? If so, then I would concentrate on those schools or consider Data Science at UCSD. Data Science is still a great option and a hot major right now.

Does anyone know if there are any accepted student groups yet for UCSB? I want to find a potential roommate as I will probably be going there!

My daugher was admitted to UCSB pre-Biology. Does anyone know what percent of students actually get accepted into the Biology Department after their sophomore year? My daughter has been accepted into the Biology department at UCSD, SLO, UCD and Boulder. I’ve heard of good students not allowed into their major at UCSB after 2 years of hard work.

The requirements to declare a Biology major is a 2.0 GPA in the pre-req courses. If a student cannot maintain a 2.0 at any college, they would be put on academic probation so I do not know why any student would not declare their major if they have a decent GPA?

I would contact the Biological sciences department directly and ask why a student would not be admitted if they meet all the requirements.

** Freshman are first admitted to the Pre-Biology major, and they may advance to full major standing in one of these majors only after fulfilling the pre-major courses and grade requirements listed below. Students will not be admitted to the pre-biology major after their seventh quarter (or equivalent), and students will only be admitted to the pre-major in their seventh quarter if they have completed introductory biology and most of the required pre- biology major courses.

Note: Completion of the pre-major does not fully satisfy the Preparation for the Major requirements for any of the majors. Students should review the full requirement sheet for the major they intend to declare and plan their schedules accordingly. Also note, acceptance into the pre-major does not guarantee admission to full major status.

Students may petition for advancement to full major status in any one of the majors as soon as they have completed the required minimum of twelve courses with a 2.0 or higher UC GPA in Area B, in Area C, and in Areas A and D combined. At the time of the petition, they must also have a 2.0 or higher grade-point average in all courses attempted toward the major (preparation and upper-division).
Note: Many upper-division EEMB and all MCDB courses require a C or higher in each of their prerequisite
courses. See General Catalog for details.
A. General Chemistry: Chemistry 1A or 2A, 1B or 2B, 1C or 2C
UNITS YET TO COMPLETE
(The entire three-quarter series and laboratories are required for all EEMB
and MCDB majors.) … 9
B. MCDB 1A, MCDB 1B, EEMB 2, EEMB 3 … 13
C. (MCDB 1AL, either MCDB 1BL or EEMB 2L, EEMB 3L) or (MCDB 1LL and EEMB 2LL) … 3
D. Two courses from the following: … 6-9
Organic Chemistry lecture: Chemistry 109A-B-C or Chemistry 109AH-BH-CH
(Not required for Ecology and Evolution or Zoology. Other majors add laboratory requirements
to lecture. Physiology and the MCDB majors require the entire 109 A-B-C or honors sequence. Aquatic Biology, Biological Science B.A. and B.S. majors require 109A-B or 109AH-BH.)
Calculus: Mathematics 3A or 34A, 3B or 34B
(Biochemistry-Molecular Biology requires Math 3A-B and beyond. The other majors give a choice of 3A-B or 34A-B.)
Statistics or Advanced Calculus: PSTAT 5LS or 5A or Math 4A (PSTAT 5LS or 5A strongly recommended for EEMB majors. Biochemistry-Molecular Biology requires Math 4A and Math 6A.)
Physics: 6A-B-C
(Biological Sciences B.A. does not require 6C. Laboratories are required for all majors.)

Thank you Gumbymom for your reply.

Congratulations Gauchos!!!

So tale of OOS 2 daughters

ACCEPTED and waitlisted at UCSB

D1: UCSD UCI UCSB
D2: UCLA, UCSC, UCI, USD

How are those waitlisted making their decisions? Can you commit to one and then withdraw if you get into UCSB?

The girls have been to UCSB many many times as I am an alum but the other campuses nope.

Are you struggling with your decision? Which is the other school?

Go Gauchos '89 '10

Yes. Definitely commit somewhere by May 1. If you get in off of the wait list, you can withdraw from the school you committed to. You don’t want to be left without a school on May 2.

hi!!
accepted & invited to join the letters and science honors program!!!

my stats:

  • female
  • in state
  • 1450 SAT (essay was pretty rough though), no ACT, & no SAT subject tests
  • 8 ap courses (5 on apush and ap bio, 4 on ap comp, 5 in progress)
  • gpa: 4.7W, 4.0UW
  • major: political science
  • extracurriculars: marching band section leader and color guard captain (w various leadership awards), summer program at ucla, summer volunteer work at a kids summer camp, csf, various leadership seminars (my extracurriculars were a pretty weak part of my application tbh)
  • my PIQs were not too bad in my opinion
  • accepted at: UCD, UCSB, UCSD, cal poly slo, csulb
  • waitlisted at: UCI
  • rejected at: UCLA (& probs UCB)

UCSB is currently my top choice and I’m super excited about possibly attending! congrats to all who were accepted and I hope to meet some of you!

Does anyone know if there is an Instagram group for accepted students to chat? I see what I think is one on Facebook - my daughter doesn’t have a FB account but if that’s the only option, then can suggest she think about making one.

Accepted student here! As far as I know there is only the Facebook page. If you go onto it, I (Cassidy Williams) posted a Google Slide document where your daughter can make a profile to find a roommate!

Thanks @sassycassie5896 - is it the one made by the group called Student Hub? It says it is not affiliated with the university and that’s the only one I see so I just wondered if there is a different one. Can’t see who the members are so I can’t see your name without joining.

@calgra Thanks!
